Bike only has a bit over 200 miles on it, but I have already noticed that about 5% of the time when downshifting (most of the time it is approaching a stop), the gear shift feels like it is not engaging anything. As opposed to the normal feeling and sound of the the gears downshifting, there is no resistance to the gear shift lever at all. Usually, I coast to the stop, tap the shifter down a few times (to no avail) & take off in 2nd or 3rd gear (since there is usually traffic behind me). I am baffled & HOPING someone knows what is happening and how to remedy it. Or can tell me that there is something wrong with the tranny & to take it to the dealer for service. needless to say, being a new rider, I don't need any additional complications while fighting traffic. Thanks! |

Take it to the dealer ASAP. The new '06 transmissions shift very nicely if they are working properly. Yours sounds like it isn't working properly at all. Get it fixed before you get yourself in to hot water on the road. Covered under warranty of course. (Message edited by gentleman_jon on November 27, 2005) |

I have noticed on the Sportys I have owned, and sometimes on the Buell, it does not downshift all the way when I am slowing down. I usually play with it...engage the clutch momentarily although it will be in a higher gear than I want, and I can then finish my downshifting. If you have not had a Sporty or Buell before, this is a brand new quirk for you. However, from all I have read, the new transmissions in both the Sportys and Buells are supposed to be super nice...super slick. As stated above, and especially if you are still under warranty or have a very good dealer/shop, take it to the dealer to make sure there is nothing serious or wrong, but I think you have discovered one of the minor quirks. It has never been a real problem with me...is not very frequent either, just something that seems to happen once in awhile...guess something in the tranny is not moving the way it should. The older Sportys were just plain hard shifting, but my O3 Buell and 04 Sporty shift very nicely...with an occasional condition like you described. Really, I am very pleased with the transmissions in the newer bikes. Cyko Bob |

Alot of trannys will 'bind up' when you're HARD on the brakes while downshifting...but I don't know to what extent your is. Bobs second sentence is spot on until you figure out whats going on. |

Thanks for the advice. Other than this "problem", the tranny is very smooth and I am happy with it. I will try to let the clutch out momentarily--even tho it might be in too high a gear. That is something I have thought about doing, but since the "problem" is so infrequent, it has been hard to try to nail it down. Any more suggestions are still welcome. |

Mine does that often also. I think sometimes that the clutch is TOO light. Not by much, however. I LOVE the way it shifts. |

Cochise, how do you deal with it? Learned any tricks? |

I just ride it. It seems to clear up. I think sometimes with mine it's because I shifted wrong and it gets hung up. I can usually get into a lower gear pretty easy if I let the clutch out some till I get it bumped down into low gear. The reason also why I say the tranny is a little too loose is because I shift the same as I had with my bolt, but with more hang-ups |

Thanks, looks like the answer may be to play with the clutch a bit when it happens. That is something I don't think I have done yet--or at least made a conscious effort to manipulate. |
