Hi,
I couldn't find anything about it using the search button, so the question is:

Is it possible to put a xb12 muffler (with valve wide open!) on a xb9?
Anyone tried before?
What about performances?
At the moment I'm using race ECM, FAST intake system and stock xb9 muffler...tons of torque but I miss the top end I used to experience when I had the buell pro race muffler.
I removed the race muffler because it was too loud and I got many fines because of that.

So I'm looking for a "more open" muffler still not loud.
Please don't talk about mufflers that use dbkillers or any other aftermarket muffler, that is supposed to be quiet because there aren't: (

The "rational" is:

1)xb12 muffler sounds louder when the valve is wide open, but it's not comparable to the noise of the others.
2)xb12 muffler is more open compared to the xb9, even if when the valve is closed (I suppose the internal diameter is bigger), and there is no doubt that the external diameter of the outlet tube is bigger.
3) xb12 muffler with the valve open FOR SURE is more open compared to the xb9's.

Of course I'll try the muffler with the 2 configuration (1valve open- 2valve closed) and then I'll decide where to fix it, 1 or 2.

I know the 12 has larger headers on it so i would imagine that the opening would be larger on the 12's muffler. I think you would have to make some kind of adapter to accommodate the larger pipe. That could be a problem with a space issue too.

Maybe you can hook it up to a choke control or something similar that's operable from the handlebars. You could then vary the position while riding.

ok, now u have me alittle curious, what kind of damage or boost do u think the whole setup, headers and all would do? i know it would loose alittle back pressure i would assume beacause of the larger headers, but wouldnt think all that much

the larger diameter of the 12 headers will dramatically reduce performance of the 9 engine below 6000 rpm or so. peak power will be about even.
as a side note, the concept of "backpressure" is not helpfull in trying to understand exhaust gas flow.

I don't think Xxxb9s talking about using the headers.
But if it's just the muffler I say go for it.
Seems like it may just do what what you want.
Seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to add the actuator, and rig it so it would open/close at a certain rpm.

I almost forgot....

no way to have an actuator to change valve position....race ECM needs some learning, ie at least 15km of 4000 flat rpm ride...so there is no way I can change valve position without affecting carburation "good" parameters.

valve's position must be "fixed".

If it was me doing it, I would open the valve since it's not in direct exhaust flow path, and see what happens...you never know, it could be the big secret we've all looked over and not tried...

Xxxb9s,

remove the inner black air box (I red in a different topic that You use it with the FAST). The FAST has been developed to get rid of the air box because the air box is a major bottle neck to air flow. Give it a try and see if top end power comes up. If it is too loud try to insulate the inside of the "tank cover". Donīt cover the air gap between the tank cover and the frame. But remove the air box. If You like You can even do a test ride without the tank cover so the FAST is exposed directly to open air.

It would be an angry if You bought an XB 12 exhaust just to find that You have an intake problem. So check this first.

If You want to do me a favor please report to me what You found as Iīm involved in the R&D work for FAST.

Hi Alex, thanks for the advices (they're always welcome) but I've done all the things you said.
I've used the airbox as it was originally intended to...AS A NOISE REDUCTOR.
I've trimmed a "halfmoon hole" right on the top of it, were it was hitting the internal K&N FAST airfilter.
Now the sound's waves are shielded but a big amount of air is not.
The air can also come from the base of the airbox, from the original intake hole, so 2 big holes that mean..no airbox at all.
I think my solution is quite good, you don't left power at home still not having all that intake noise.
I'll post some pics, this way someone can get my experience.

On a side note.
Now the heat is shielded by the thermal mat and by the base of the airbox, so double shield.
The only problem was to put the fake tank (the one colored) back in its position, because the airbox was just alittle bit taller
than before..(because of the thermal mat underneat it).
The problem was very easy to fix...just a little pression and it canbe placed back...fits like a (thight) glove; )

OK...I'll admit to it. A friend got what we thought was a stock 9 muffler on e-bay and when it arrived...it was off a 12. We installed it on my 9 curious of the sound level and power it would deliver with the valve open.

The bike is an 03 XB9S with race ecm. Yes it ran better than the stock 9 can but the sound was not appealing to me, this is only my opinion based on a 40 mile ride before we pulled it back off.

Some one who's cut one apart (we know you're out there)would need to verify, but we assumed the larger diameter pipes inside the 12 muffler were responsible for the strange exhaust note.

We have yet to be hassled with a Buell Race Can and/or Drummer. I believe the guy with the Drummer requested Kevin build him one on the quiet side, it has great sound and is not as loud as the factory race can.

Just my opinion...I know some people get hassled for the race can because it says "Off Road Use Only" Plenty of people on this site that have options for a modified stock can with guaranteed satisfaction. Enough said...good luck!

The green ones are XB12 muffler.
And the red ones the XB12 muffler with open valve.

The upper lines are not torque, but power in Newton.

Hi everyone, I am fairly new to the site and happened along this thread. I have a 9r and am going to try a 12 header(9 header got rashed in gravel vs. torque battle. gravel won.) Anyway ran across a 12 header for $20. I am going to try it out and see what kind of power gains or losses I will see. I will let you all know how it works out. Thanks joey

I think the graphic didn't apply my case, since a FAST do perform a lot different compared to stock xb crappy intake/airfilter system

Joey, I think it's going to be more trouble than it's going to be worth. There are plenty of exhaust experts out there that'll tell you you're headed for power loss. Swapping headers will take you about an hour with the right set of tools, help, and experience.
Xxxb9s, That dip you see may go away, or at least smooth out a bit with the FAST added.

yes I second glitch, the headers swap has been already done and it is not leading to any power gain.

I'd like to know which is the "valve open" position.

I have the picture of the muffler with the external position of the actuator buy I don't know how to upload it.

any help is appreciated


(if the muffler is removed does the actuator go to the "open" position?)

When you remove the cable for the servo, the valve is closed. When I put it on my XB9, we wired the valve into the open position for the S-O-P Dyno run.
I'm very interested in what you think of the sound.
And..I would agree, adding the 12 header on a stock 9...won't do any good.

just got the xb12 muffler.

I've mounted it in 1/2 hour since I've done it 3 times and now I know how to do it.

today it's raining so I went out just to "hear how it sounded".

I couldn't ride much so I couldn't drive at 4000 as much as the race ECM would need to learn the new airflow setup.

Anyway, this is my firs and incomplete report:

the sound is increased compared to xb9 muffler.
It is very weird to me but it sounds louder at idle!! after 2000rpm it sounds very similar to xb9, above 5000 it is louder.

the power delivery (with the "unlearned" race ECM) is pretty much like the graphic posted above.

stronger below 3000rmp, then a big hole, and stronger above 5000rpm.

I'm waiting for a nice sunny day to make a long run trying to make the ECM figuring out what's going on.

I guess if a TFI would help to fix that big hole too.

Anyway if I can't get the power increase I'm looking for I'll just cut that ziptie that is holding the valve open.

Then I'd get the "green" curve of the graphic (or slightly better due to my FAST system).
