Hello, Recently my gas cap has gotten more and more "stuck" when trying to remove when refueling as well as putting it back on. The key gets stuck when trying to turn it for removal...pushing down on the key or the cap doesn't help at all...it is almost like the spring is too strong or the plastic sliders in there are binding up and not sliding like they should. I took it all apart and sanded down a "corner" at the top of the "ramp" where the cap interlocks...that made it easier to get it back on...however removal is still difficult...the point where I can feel the key bending...and I am holding the key near the point where it goes into the cap. When removing the cap there is no air rushing in or out so I don't think pressure or vacuum is causing this...it is purely in the cap/tank interface where something is sticking and binding up. Anyone else heard of this and if so how was it fixed short of getting a new cap? Thanx, matt |

My cap is kinda sticky sometimes when I goto take it off but not so bad I can feel the key bending. |

The guts of the lock inside the cap are probably wearing out. Same thing happened to a new friend of mine that rides an M2. You may want to consider buying a spare cap and getting it keyed to match. |

Spray a little WD40 or PB blaster into the key hole and in the holes on the bottom of the gas cap. I've has this happen with many bikes, nothing a little lube won't fix. |

I will give the lube idea a try...along with a call to Daves for a new cap. Thought about the lube but wasn't sure about that stuff dropping into the tank though. Thanks for the quick feedback fellow Buellers! |

Never hurt my bike. I used WD40. Once you spray some in there, put the key in there to spread it out. Should turn like new after that. |

I put some WD40 on the internal workings of the cap...it DOES turn better now...but still sticks at one point. I am going to try sanding the parts sticking out on the cap itself to smooth out the angled ramp and see if that makes it better. I do see a sharp edge on one of them that could be causing the binding. If that doesn't do it then a new cap is in order... |

My XB9S cap was HARD to remove when I bought the bike. A little WD and a firm hand and it opens okay. Now with 9k miles I'm used to it and just press down and turn the key slowly. |

Sometimes mine has more stiction that appears to happen only when hot but not every time it is hot. WD40 seems to work. |

removal is still difficult...the point where I can feel the key bending...and I am holding the key near the point where it goes into the cap. I have this exact problem. Sometimes I am just waiting on pins and needles for the key to break off. Then I imagine the worst- that I'll have to ask one of the guys for help I think I'll try the Wd-40 trick as well. Thanks :} |

A few drops of wd-40 in your fuel will not hurt anything anyways. |

I drenched the underside of my cap. All holes got some WD40. Turn a few times and all was well. Try that also. |

I heard you not suppose to use wd40 on a lock. I used graphite on mine and worked perfect since. |

The problem isn't when moving the lock or the internal workings when the cap is off the bike...it is actually pretty smooth at that point. It is when using it on the bike that it is sticking...that is the difference. |

That's funny, the cap on mine seemed to be getting progressively harder to remove a few weeks ago, but now that premium fuel has dropped from $3.29 back to about $2.49 it seems to be getting easier to remove. |

Liquid lubes are discouraged on locks because they attract and hold dust/dirt. Graphite is better for that reason. |

Same issue with mine. I eventually snapped the key even though I had been very careful with it for months. I also tried all kinds of lubricants, it eventually get difficult inserting the key and turning. I got very luck and was able to remove the broken key from the lock, but it still left me stranded until my wife could pick me and the bike up with her truck. HD dealer charges $30 bucks for two cut keys and had to wait 1.5 weeks for it. I had master locksmith cut me a key out the broken key. He used a BMW motorcyle key and worked it so that it inserted and turned just fine. Cost me $6 bucks Got a |

I had the same problem until I noticed that I wasn't pushing the key all the way down! I had to go like another millimeter further down and viola! |
