remembered reading on "another board" that the XB's were bad about having certain bolts or screws rusting when ridden in wet weather or left outside for prolonged amounts of time. my XB12r should arrive on the 18th and i would like to remedy(sp?) this "problem" before it happens. if this is true, what bolts or screws would need to be replaced with stainless? also, if this is true, why aren't they rusting when the bike gets washed? |

I am an absolute FREAK when it comes to cleaning my Firebolt. I use a toothbrush, Qtips and WD40 on each nut and bolt. So far the only ones that actually rust are the exhaust manifold studs. They rust like a mutha and there isn't much you can do about it. The others sorta just get a whitish corrosion on them but it comes right off with the WD40. It takes me about 4 hours per cleaning so have fun and do it right if your going to do it at all LOL! |

Got my new xb12 last november. It hasn't seen a garage until this July when I got married and moved. Riding in south Georgia I have been wet many times. after walking around the bike just now, the only rust I see is: The exhaust header nuts and exhaust clamp the outside edges of the wheel bearings. This is all cosmetic and has not hampered the machine at all. My 2 cents. |

P.S. I am not a neat freak polishing my girl every weekend and hitting her with a Qtip(though she has earned it), and this is all the rust I see. |

Jarhead, Are you sure that is rust on your wheel bearings? Mine had the same thing and when I hit them with a toothbrush they cleaned up nicely. Course then again to most people stuff like that doesn't matter much. My riding crew makes fun of me for cleaning so much but it is an obsession. |

Luv, it is just light surface rust that would clean up easy with a rag or a brush. I guess I am more of a fan of flat black as opposed to polish and chrome. A ridden rat is better than a hanger queen any day! IMHO (Message edited by jarhead on November 10, 2005) |

I just change the rusting bolts out for stainless. Rivets also. Course, I hate rivets so they were going anyways. |
