I recently got a letter from my dealer (Glendale) about extended warranties. I usually would throw these things away since I would rather do the work myself and wouldn’t want my bike at the dealer for a month when I could fix it myself in a week. Plus it would run out before anything major went wrong. If I lived some place that had a winter I wouldn’t even consider this but being in SoCal, as long as it is not raining I take the bike where ever I go. The reason I am considering this is that it states it’s good for unlimited miles. I’m assuming the 7 year extend warranty is on top of the 2 year factory one and that would come out to 9 years. At the rate I am going I’ll have well over 100,000 miles on my Firebolt by then. Things don’t last forever and eventually need to be replaced. Does anybody think I’d end up spending $2k in repairs in 100,000 miles that would be covered under warranty? On the plus side it would help the resale value if I decide to sell it and I’m hoping would cover any major engine or tranny work. On the minus side if it gets totaled or stolen in those 7 years I’m out $2k.

My view on ext warranties. If you feel comfortable with doing the work yourself, save the bucks. 2 grand will buy quite a few parts. Usually the extended warranty is not on top of the factory warranty so you are really buying just five years additional coverage. I would check that with the dealership though as I'm going on my experience with auto warranties. With the new warranty being 2 years, if there is a major defect it should rear it's ugly head by then. Hope this helps.

Hey, I'm new here to post, but I couldn't sit idly by and read this without remindng you that you'll never "out 2k." reason is that by law, an extended warranty can be ammortized (sp?), and the remaining value of the warranty would be refunded to you, should something force your warranty to be a waste. So, if all hell does break loose, if you sell it, or if you just don't want it anymore, then you can get a partial refund.

I hope that helps.

I got the extended warranty on my bike for piece of mind. My warranty is 5 years total and I put the cost of it right into my loan. I'm sure that by the time I've had my bike for five years there will be some major damage to something expensive. If I keep any bike for 5 years no matter what the make there will be some sort of major damage. I just ride/drive (same with cars) the crap out of stuff, so an extended warranty is worth its weight in gold.

Ya know, I NEVER got in writing just exactly what the extended warranty covers. Does anyone Really know and where can I get a copy of it?

I just went through this this past week. I canceled mine within the 90 day window and will get a full refund.

What got me thinking was I plan to take mine to the dealership for its normal service. That alone is rather expensive. I just had a 10k service done on my V-rod. After gathering all the receipts for the service on the V-Rod, it was very close to what was spent on the extended warranty.

Sure it is piece of mind, but the way they test and design these bikes now, something truly horrific would have to happen. And if it does happen, it will happen within the warranty period.

The 7 year warranty includes the first 2 years.
You are buying 5 additional years for a TOTAL of 7 not 9 years.

I got an extended warranty for my 2000 M2, the 3 year deal. I was aware of all the reliability issues so I wanted to be covered in case of a major problem. The only thing that ever went wrong was my SRP shock bleeding to death at 14 months. The extended warranty didn't cover it and I was one pissed of son-of-a-bitch.

I want my money back.

Thanks for correcting that Dave. So that is $400 per year. That doesn't sound like much of a deal since it sounds like they don't cover a shock.

Dave would you have an idea on what they cover? If it is everything but normal wear items like tires and brakes but advently any moving part wears out. Wheel bearings, oil pump, shocks, steering head bearing, motor mounts, are any of these covered?

Djkaplan, can you expand on that a bit? what do you mean by 'bleeding to death'? i just noticed my shock reservoir is weeping from the rear of the canister and have my eye on it. its the stock Showa unit.

Type,
Get it fixed under warranty as soon as you can.

The 7 year(adding 5 years) ESP thru HD for a Buell XB is 1494.00
That figures out to 298.80 per year, not 400.00

What, don't tell me your dealer wants 2000.00 for it?

The list of what is covered and not covered is too long for me to type out.
Wear and tear and maint items are not covered.

I bought an extra year when I bought my bike.
My stator was fixed under my warranty, if I hadn't bought the extra year I'd have been SOL.
Now here's the kicker, the extra year, and the stator were about the same cost.
Mind you, XBs only had a one year back then.

It just may be better to have it than not need it.
It's a gray area, these bikes are very reliable.
If you're going to keep it stock and play by the rules, it could be worth it.

Dave, I looked at the letter again and the 2k is for the big twins. That is the only price list they gave. 1500 sounds little better.

Thepup, what repair was $4000? Did the engine blow or something?

When I bought my 03 XB9R, I got the extended warranty because they offered a better interest rate on the loan(if you got the extended warranty), so it only cost about half of the rate of the warranty...Charlie

I am going to put my vote in for "No". It already comes with 2 years unlimited miles from the factory, and if something doesn't go wrong then, just keep your fingers crossed.

"Djkaplan, can you expand on that a bit? what do you mean by 'bleeding to death'?"

The oil leaked out from the shaft seal. This is a totally different Showa shock than you have though.
