I use amsoil 20/50 in my '04 12R. It loves the stuff. I also use it in the primary/tranny and it shifts much smoother. I'm sure there are others who have had similar results with other synthetic oils too, but I'm partial to amsoil. |

Amsoil, or any other synthetic is great for your Buell. If your Mobil One is getting milky, it is because water is getting into your primary chain case. This can happen through the clutch cable among other causes. I just changed my M1 at 10,000 miles. It was not at all milky, and it has made shifting much smoother. You might want to look in the Knowledge Vault on this subject which has been discussed in the greatest possible detail. (Message edited by gentleman_jon on October 22, 2005) |

Loved the Amsoil product, but had the WORST customer service ever with the Amsoil Corporation. Bad enough to steer me away from using their products again. |

I'll be putting Amsoil in my new Ss today @ 900 miles (first oil change). 20/50 for Vtwin engines in both the crankcase and tranny. I'm using their oil filter too. Not that it means much, but it says right on the container that its made for Buell and HD. |

The last time I looked, the SYN 3 had no API or other ratings on it. If that still is true, I would not use it in my XB. I have used M1 and Red Line. Both seem to be great oils. |

My opinion: AMSOIL is one of the best synthetic oils your money can buy. Mobil 1 is next in line. |

I have no data except that I have run and raced the following synthetics: Syn3, Royal Purple, Motorex, Redline. No problems or complaints. Syn3 was the only one I was comfortable running in both the primary and crankcase though. Just suspicion, not that I had problems with the others. I have used Redline Hi Shock in the primary but change it pretty often. Don't know if it would get cruddy on a street bike after a while (seem to remember some pics about that but am too lazy to do a search) |

I do not like amsoil because of there marketing and sales style The reason they market the way they do is because they are not mass marketed like the rest. How many commercials have you seen for Amsoil? Then loook at how many commercials and advertising are run for Mobil, Castrol, Havoline and so on. Amsoil only gets there name out by a few hard working citizens and a few sponserships here and there. J} |

They are BOTH good oils, SYN3 is factory so that pretty much eliminates and "warranty" concerns. Before I get flamed, yes I know that as long as the oil meets yadda yadda yadda .....can't go wrong with SYN3, just my 2$'s worth....can't get anything for 2 cents nowadays |

I run amsoil in my truck. She's still solid after 85K miles. I have 16qts of Syn 3 left on the shelf. Once it's gone, I'll add some 20W50 to my amsoil order to put in the cycle engines. Still deciding on what to run in the R. Glide's primary and trans and the XB12X trans/primary. Cheers |

"tried amsoil and find it ran a little hotter then syn3" Really? how much hotter did your engine run with oil brand X as compared to oil brand Y? what measuring device was used to make this determination? were the two lubricants in question present in equal quantities, and used under similar ambient conditions? were both lubricants used in identical test engines, and were both lubricants on a similar usage/ drain schedule? is it possible that there were some unaccounted variables present? possibly a new engine which was still in the running-in phase, and the oil change in question occured during or immediately prior to a change in the outside ambient temperature? is it possible that your engine temperature measuring equipment has shifted or lost its zero? is it possible that you have made a subjective analysis of two lubricants performance parameters based on something not objectively quantifiable? |

Sorry I'm very late to this discussion but after reading it the other day I went to Amsoil.com for more info. I asked them to send me some stuff and guess what I found inside one of the pretty glossy ads. Three Buell tubers in a row. It was buelltiful. FYI |

I know these oil threads can go on and on, but there is a good OIL article starting on page 32 of the November 2005 issue of American Iron Magazine. A "MUST READ" for all of us who are oil enthusiasts! |

Cyko_bob, Yep that American Iron magazine article (nov 2005) is what has me thinking of changing out the Syn 3 (20W50) in the FLTRI's primary and trans. The author owns (I think he's the owner) a shop that has alot of experience working on Harley engines. Course, it could also be that he echoes some on my own thoughts on the subject (20W50 in the trans). Sure 75-90 gear lube and 20W50 oil may be close in viscosity, I'm just wondering about the additive packages and how 20W50 can withstand the shearing effect of gears meshing together. Want the XB12X to last a long time, as I love riding it :-) Just my thoughts. Cheers |

Ok, I'm trying it. I have been nervous about the Syn3 from the start. My sx eats about a quart of it per 1000 miles and I only have 4200 on it. Maybe, the Amsoil will be resistant to that. Hopefully, the tranny will shift smoother too. I am also trying their oil filter. |
