damn <30mph lowside into median .. on loose spilled gravel on road on new pirelli diablos .. braking on turn .. tuckedunder violently & smashed into median w/ me under it .. i'm ok .. a few nicks & bruises .. triple tree snapped in 2 on left side .. right front fork bent back .. very little other major visible damage (i acted as the frame puck ;p) .. was stunned how the thought a cast alum. triple clamp was ok on top (?yoke) .. anyway. anyone else find this weakness? | ||

The triples are designed to break before the steering head tears the gas tank open! Trust me on that, I've binned my racebike a half dozen times now. | ||

Vonsliek, I had a near similar accident three months ago. The Pirelli Diablos require "break in" or so I was told as they are uber slick. Like you, I spilled braking into a corner trying to avoid the slow, weaving, gardner truck. I didn't snap my triple tree but did scratch my frame. Oh, that's another story on the agony of having the frame replaced. | ||

monkey .. dang! yeah .. i think the diablos need a little scrubbing in .. at least my front is now scrubbed in a bit! ;P sorry abt yr frame .. i read a british mag road test of the xb9x & the dude lost it on some diesel spill .. he said that any other w/b bike wld have given him enough warning to at least TRY to pit his skills in a front end slide, but the buell just went WHAM! .. i can see this now!  still a stonking hot little bike tho! .. i limp off slowly into the distance ... paul. | ||

Glad to hear both ya'll are for the most part OK. ANY TIME you get new tires, take it easy at first to get them scrubbed in. Some people even scrub their tires with soap and water first. | ||

Vonsliek, sorry to hear about the accident--glad you're OK. Glitch, I've heard of riders scrubbing in their tires with sandpaper, but never with soap and water. I'm dunno if the slickness of new tires is caused by a mould release agent (like most guys say) or by a thin "skin" formed on the rubber by the heat of the mould--release agent might be removed by soap, but a skin would be cut by sandpaper (or asphalt). BTW, I had no problems with my Diablos at all, but I did take it easy for the first 100 km or so! | ||

Vonsliek, I didn't wanna sound insensitive to your tip-over and just launch on the technical discussion! Glad you ARE OK (except the bruises and psycological pain) That being said, I use the stock triple clamps. I fall too often on the track and don't wanna break the front end of the chassis open for a fuel spill. I really trust their engineering and stronger triples COULD tear open the fuel tank in even a relatively low-speed get-off. Bartels uses the stock triples but built a custom insert so they could mount clip-ons below the triple clamps (over the tapered section of the fork tube) We both also have raised the front end as high as it will go (dropping the forks in the triples) - since we wanted to "slow" the steering a bit under hard braking when the angle gets really steep with the forks compressed. | ||

well .. u lot are gonna LOVE this .. got the damage assesment back from the dealership .. CA$8750 & change!!?! fack! thats US$7000+ .. thats a new bike .. called state farm (my ins.) to let them know that delaership said its almost a right-off .. what can u do, eh?! no more buells for me .. too expensive to fix after a low speed lowside .. or, rip-off dealership (which i never thought they were, previously). | ||

sad to say .. unless i get mine back after ins. done w/ it .. they had everything almost, minus motor & wheels .. (apparently a "gouged & scratched" frame is "unrepairable" & hence requires replacing at a canadian $2650++) .. for example. new swingarm, forks, brakes ... yadda yadda .. all i noticed busted was fork, triple clamp, peg & light .. scratched headers .. i guess either they have highly specific criteria or run a used parts biz on eGay?! its is done .. thinking i'll fic the ironhead chopper & get a zx-10r or something for track duties?! | ||

CA$8750 Then it's not totaled. Take your list and compare it to a ZX10 for the same parts, bet it's more, plus add in all the broken plastic of the ZX10. | ||

maybe true .. but i can get a hardly used zx10r for CA$10995 .. don't get me wrong . i LOVE my buell .. am just disappointed it took so little to nearly total it. | ||

If you have the ins company total it - be sure to offer to buy it back salvage from them. YOu can get it for pennies on the dollar, replace some parts and PRESTO - track bike! | ||

i totaled out my 03 xb9r. slaughter's right if they total it, haggle with them, u can get them to drop the price ALOT! i bought my bike back for less than scrap value. i could sell the motor and double my money. I have scrounged up almost all the parts to put it back together almost good as new though, and will have 1/3 the cost of buying another 03 into this one. buy it back. its almost winter. u have awhile to round everything up. just my opinion  | ||

I am not sure if there's a wait. Shouldn't be. I think you can buy it salvage from your insurance company the day they cut you a check - some companies even haggle with you to cut you a smaller check figuring the salvage value and reducing their payment to you as the salvor (if that's the right word) The insurance company HOPES to have somebody put in a salvage bid to reduce their losses - may as well be YOU!!! Besides, once you get the first real dents and scrapes, it's easier to push it a bit harder on the track. | ||

interesting slaughter .. i will certainly be asking abt it .. i didn't call the cops, or make a police report .. no-one but me involved & no property damage to anyone but me .. had a buddy rescue me .. i guess he's my main witness?! :\ i definitely think it'll make a great tracker .. but i will definitely have a client - who offered to show me how to carbon-fibre molds - teach me how to make frame covers - like motogp bikes have - & all the body work .. in a great way its an awesome opportunity to make it my learning tool - as i am slated for a '06 start for MMI .. either way .. i don't want the thing to go to waste .. we bonded, me & her! i'll keep u - obviously - informed! | ||

this is what i figured .. what race bike ain't?! i seen close-ups of kawasaki's motogp - nakano - zx-rr & it has nasty taping & scratches in c/f .. they repair what the HAVE to! |
