This is a question about my son Caleb's Buell Firebolt. He's currently away in the military and I told him I'd fix it before he returns.
The high beam works fine. The low beam is inoperable. When the switch is on the low beam, while there is no low beam, if I hit the "high beam passing button" the high beam will activate. The low beam bulb has been switched out with a new one that was tested and worked. Please advise. Also, he has had no engine mods done to his XB9R. Only pipe mod, TFI, and XB12 air filter, etc. Would a hot cam spice things up and if so, what would you recommend? Thanks. Dave

I doubt a hot cam will help the low beam

Take the switch off the bar and check it out there to begin with. Simple stuff first. Check the fuses.

I was told by the nallin guys that there are no "street" cams available and the race cams are to hot for the street. Now I know guys run them on the street. I wonder if they are that radical that the bike become to pipey or on/off with the power to ride on the street.

As for the bulb out. check the ground. The bulb uses the housing for a ground, if the retainer springs aren't holding tight it will cause a poor ground. Check to see if you have power with a test light to a known good ground. You can trace it from there, let us know your progress.

the "E" cams in the XB are pretty well matched to the throttle body and valve sizes. with the electronics signing off spark at 7500 rpm, and the horsepower curve still climbing steeply at that point, i would say there is very little to be gained by a longer duration cam profile. plenty of room to lose torque, but dont think you will gain anything unless your valve sizes increase and compression goes up a bit. for a 10:1 compression air cooled motor i think you are right about where you should expect to be.

on the note of the headlight, I think I remember someone either saying on in there profile that a wire come off the back of the switch and they had to re-solder it. so check there too

Before you go chasing after a possibly non-existant problem, put the bike in nuetral & check.

My Firebolt lowbeam does not light if I park the bike in gear (1st).

Conversely, the low beam will light w/o the engine running if parked in nuetral.

Dunno why it's like that, but it threw me for a loop for a while...

We put cams in a XB9R with less than favorable street performance.
I do think that it made the bike faster and it runs well at WOT, but it is snatchy and kinda unpredictable in the lower rpm and constant throttle situations. Not what I would want in a street bike.

It basically wont idle when cold, and the throttle response off idle is terrible. I jsut think the ECM cant compensate for the cam. Like I said, wouldnt recommend it, but it does run great at WOT, but thats about it.

That wire coming off was on my bike...and noted in my profile. It was really odd how it happened and my guess is it is not very common.

I would check the more obvious...ground, neutral safety switch, fuzes, etc...those are more likely.
