Well with all the wheelie talk lately had to go out try a few with a couple of friends. Found a parking lot and tore it up for about an hour or so practicing some stand up wheelies, throttle wheelies, and so on. Well as I was leaving thought I would do one more and....... yup lost it. Rode the bike right past twelve o'clock. Luckily was only doing about 5 - 10 mph. Just scraped my knee nothing serious (and a big shot to my ego). The bike has some minor to moderate damage. Left mirror, both left foot pegs (big surprise there), shifter, primary cover, some light scratches on the swing arm, tail light, left rear blinker, and the rear faring (the tail light and blinker are no big deal as I have an under tail on the way). Big time buzz kill, had to ride home in third. I was pretty lucky no major damage, and end of the season. If anyone has a good used primary cover and/or a white rear tail section for an 03 9r let me know. Daves you'll be hearing from me sooner than later. that's rotten. i'm sorry that happened. i never pull wheelies for that very reason. i have riding buddies that date back to high school and some of them are virtual wheelie pros. all of them, however, have also trashed a bike at one time or another. on the other hand... what are we living for? life is to be fun. things are to be enjoyed. i bet you had a good time the hour before you dumped your bike. you'll get it fixed, so don't cry too long. i'm glad to hear you aren't hurt. you also make a good argument for playing in a parking lot instead of on the street. it could have been worse. |

LOL I had the same thing happen with aw what the hell one more thought process. Only mine wasn't as bad I pulled a nice high n long stand up n came down WAY TOO HARD n smacked my helmet off my windshield. Put a nice long 6 inch crack right down the middle of it. Just ordered a blue iridium replacement from trojan and should have it in about 6 weeks. Sure is a kick to the ego when ya do sumthin dumb like that in front of people huh. |

You said it Buelltroll, left there with my tail between my legs. Was doing them all night and the LAST one screwed up royally. But like builtbyted said life is supposed to be fun, had a great time right up until then. Glad to hear you had minor damage. |

Honestly thank you for posting this. It reminds those of us to be more careful and what can happened when things go wrong. Not that I do not want to enjoy and get my bike out to play, but one must be real careful until it's fully mastered. I was afraid that w/ all the talk of wheelies / stoppies, people with no skill (like me) will get over confident and go out and tired this stuff and get seriously hurt.... I for one will not be trying this until I'm waaaaayyyy more competent on two wheels first. Glad to hear nothing is broken. Fix'em up and keep on riding. |

Guess you found the "balance point"(and then some) Glad you're OK. (I'm scared to shift hard....but it sure is fun) |

You wont learn to wheelie unless you flip over a few times, that is how we get really good at knowing where the balance point is. |

Sorry to hear that. You could however probably sue the message board for making you wheelie your bike and get enough to retire. God bless America! |

Sorry to hear it RI. I've been close myself a few times, including when I came down too hard and snapped a peg off. I've been a lot more cautious with the new Ss. It wheelies differently than my 9 did. It seems to come up a bit slower and will ride a low angle wheelie much longer. |

I ride wheelies all of the time, but I almost looped mine last weekend. In fact last week was bad for wheelies all together for me. I had a long 3rd gear standup wheely on the highway get really wobbly on me and I wasn't sure what was going to happen when I set it down. Luckily it came down pretty straight and was not a big deal. Then that night a women changed lanes right into the lane that I was riding a wheely in while I was coming up behind her. I made it through that pretty well because I saw her doing it. Then this weekend I was practicing standups in a parking lot at about 5 mph, and decided to do some seated stuff and overcompensated badly. My friends said the bike went straight up to 12 or past before it came back down. Don't feel bad, even people that know how to wheely mess up! |

I dont know, jsut the idea of pulling a very vertical wheelie on my 9S seems scary, being it is so short. Like standing up on it seem absurd. I feel like if i try to stand up, then bounce the front end, that it will just loop right away on me. |

Also, if i had a crash cage I think i would be alot less scared, yet I cant seem to find one for my 9S |

There is a powers crash cage for Buells. A crash cage will not protect your bike in a looped wheely though. It may still protect you cases and engine, but the rest of your bike will still be crushed. If you start small you will get comfortable doing wheelies. The XB is pretty stable with the front end up. When it has gotten squirrley on me I've been at 12 o'clock or right there close to it. If you are scared of the consequences you should not wheely. It is like gambling, don't go to the casino with any money you are not prepared to loose. The same goes for stunting, don't stunt a bike that you are not prepared to crash. |

Thats totally true, which is why i want to maybe consider buying part by part to build a stunt bike, cause i really want to learn. i just wish i had a fellow buller to help me learn, cause i cant learn from all my buddies with jap bikes, thats a whole differnt game. They dont understaand the tourqe difference. |

All of the same principles still apply, it is just the power delivery that is different. I switch from a Yamaha to my Buell and I have a lot easier time stunting my current bike than my old one. Don't let the guys on the Japanese bikes make you think that your bike is sooooo different. It is different, but there are V-twin Japanese bikes that people stunt on too. You can wheely anything, it is all about control. |

By the way, if you want a stunt bike. Find a bike on ebay or somewhere else that has a salvaged title. Since it will not be for street use anyway you can fix whatever is wrong with it, leave it ugly and beat the crap out of it! That would be much cheaper than buying something piece by piece. |

you have a 12R, so that surely makes it a bit easier, but Im sure I can learn on my 9S, im just waiting for when i get a bit more power out of it, open the air box up, ECM, exhaust... that might help me a bit.. wouldnt ya think |

All of my friends here in KC have 9S models and one of the guys is better than I am! He can ride 3rd gear highway wheelies just as easily as I can. Trust me, when it comes to stunting it is the rider and his balls, not the bike! Please don't take offense to that, I'm not calling you a wuss, that is just what it takes to put a 10K motorcycle up in the air. (Message edited by Olinxb12r on October 20, 2005) |

Someone once told me to cover the rear brake when doing wheelies. That way you can abort and bring it down in case it wants to go over. I can't wheelie worth Jack, but it sounded like a good idea. Henrik |

Hi John! I've been following John's progress, and if that vid helped him it must be pretty good. About two months ago John posted up on Chicagoriders about wheelies and he has come a long way since then! |

Thanks to Buellin for posting a not so easily talked about topic. Thanks bud! I've got a good one for ya. This weekend I went riding with some buddies, one of which has recently traded his 9S in for an R6 which is an entirely different story, and we went ripping through some good twisties I had never been on before. Well we parted ways after a couple hours and when I got home I shut the bike down and started taking gear off as I was leaning it over on its sidestand. Problem is I never put the sidestand down and proceeded to drop it directly on its face. (At this point, I would have felt better with an R6 too) The damage: broken left rider footpeg, broken shifter lever, scratched mirror, and a bent clutch lever. DoH! Just goes to show you that you can be riding near the edge all day and eat it when your not paying attention in the driveway. (Message edited by kowpow225 on October 20, 2005) |

That sucks kowpow. You must have really been kicking yourself. Covering the rear brake is good advice. I my case I ended up running behind my bike with my hands on the bars for a few seconds before tripping and letting go of the bike. I don't know how/when my feet came off the pegs. Used to ride dirt bikes and bailed when I got in trouble, maybe I did that out of habbit? As for posting a not so easy topic, the buddy I was with has a big mouth and the whole state has to know by now. Therefore I try not to let it bother me to much, if I could help anyone by posting this all the better. Still don't know if I am pro-wheelie or anti-wheelie (sounds stupid after what I just did) but you have to be careful. Protect yourself and your bike, get protective gear for you and you bike. |

Buellin ri it happens to the best of us, if you want to play you got to pay sometimes. Lets just hope you learned from this adventure. I have also looped one during a wheelie a looong time ago. I have only been riding my 9s for a few months now but I find that clutching it up in second the best way. I'm a clutch person for wheelies always have been, I feel I have more control. Hey you could always try the front wheel! |
