I noticed a high pitched electrical type sound from the engine area... Tried to locate it, might be from behind the rear cylinder if I listen from the side, or from the airbox if I listen to the top. Doesnt really sound like a gear or anything mechanical, reminds me more of an electrical whine that doesnt change regardless of speed/rpm. When idling, it is really noticeable. Any suggestions on what it might be and is this normal?? |

Maybe your fuel pump? It used to bother me when I would first turn the key but I got used to that. Within about the last two weeks I have been able to now hear it while riding around which is starting to bother me. I dont know if that is good or bad but it sounds just like a high pitched whine like you describe. John |

Thats a thought. It isn't like that initial whine that you hear as you let the injection system warm up. |

Left side, more towards top/middle of frame sorta? My 12 started making a sound like this a few days ago in that area. I know its new. Definitely not on the right side. The whine on startup is fine, and normal, this noise continues while the bike is running though now. Never did it in the past. Coincidentally I've been having idle issues (seems to hunt all over, requires multiples stops to readjust) and surging at cruise. I disconnected my TFI today to see if that was the 'cause for the running issues but the bike acts the same. I spoke to George at Dobeck today who mentioned hearing about a few fuel pump issues starting to crop up. I'm not saying any of these things are related... just my observations while I now try to figure out my new set of issues. Bike is going in for its 5th TPS reset next week. Man I wish I could do this at home. Yeah, I know I could buy some software but I'm fresh outta cash. My dealer charges me for TPS resets and other diagnostic stuff. I just realized I got charged for a chaffed wire a few weeks ago! ($60 bill for TPS + shrink wrap labor. lame.) (Message edited by typeone on September 27, 2005) |

That sucks about your TFI. Black Betty has an issue with idling when cold as well. Stumbles and farts. The mechanic that did the out of province inspection suggested that I take it to a dealer to get checked. He works on all the Buells in town here. Kinda sounds like the same problem that you have been having. |

I'm still gonna use the TFI, just wanted to narrow down the possible causes for the idle and surge issues. They're still there without the TFI in place. hmmm. |

Sounds like it could be the fuel pump, which is located on the left rear of the frame. Mine gets noisier as the tank gets empty too. Noise is normal. |

Echoing my comment from above... Dobeck/George told me to have my dealer do a fuel pressure test (because of the failed pumps he's hearing about) just to rule that out of the picture. I hear this new noise whether the tank is full or near empty. |
