I have a Ulysses. Last week the tech lost control of the bike as he was preparing it and my bike fell over hitting the right peg on the way down.
The peg is fine but the stress snapped off the peg mounting bracket. The dealer welded it up while I wait for a new mount to be shipped out. Maybe the Uly's pegs *are* stronger and transferring the stress to the mounting bracket instead. It would have been cheaper to replace a peg rather than the whole mount. (Both rider and passenger pegs attach to one mounting bracket.)

Engineering opinion...
Suspect that broken footpeg of 110 LB rider had been previously compromised due to drop or other severe impact.
There is no way that a mere 110 LB (55 LB per side) rider would be able to fracture the stock footpeg. Period. |

The XB was put thru extensive crash testing during development. I still also find it very hard to believe that footpegs are/could be an issue under *normal* riding conditions or, heck, even with a bit of hoolliganism (Buell'ers have long reputation of spirited riding). |

I'm not calling anyone a liar. It's just that the rest of the bike is SO well designed, I can't imagine a detail like this slipping. |

Cruisin, unfortunate you were told ulysses pegs don't fit xb models. Design angle appears ok; but, hinge/bracket dimensional clearance different maybe? Seems gentle persuasion (not force) would coax em on an xb. Ulysses peg:

Luvthemtorts, haven't gotten a good look at the Uly passenger peg system so I can't answer your question for sure; however, they do retract - so, I'd assume they're spring loaded like the rider peg. Here's a better angle shot of the Uly rider peg spring:
You might want to try for an answer/confirmation/suggestions about fitting Uly pegs on an XB in the Uly forum maybe.. |

Porosity was mentioned as a possible culprit as to why a peg failed. I can help put that concern to sleep. I work in the NDT/NDE field (Non-destructive Testing / Evaluation) and it would be quick and easy for me to "x-ray" (radiograph) one of these failed pegs. If the casting was porous, it would show up bigger than life!

Johnb - They look awefully similar...if I had one of each bike I'd take a second to try it (hint hint, Al, Dave).
The problem with all aftermarket pegs that utilize the stock hanger is that they are straight out from the mount. I (being tall) prefer to have the inch drop that the S pegs provide.
My peg was not powder coated and snapped like a twig when I was backing out of my driveway and got too close to the Jetta. I wouldn't think a metal peg would snap when getting caught on a plastic bumper, but I think it was because of the way it was designed. The u channel can take plenty of force from the top...just not from the side.
Those Ulysses pegs look pretty nice. Could someone PLEASE take one and try it on a regular Firebolt or Lightning? |

If you look at accessories on the Buell web site for the Ulysses it shows that the same traction pegs for the other XB models will fit on the Ulysses so I would think we can assume that the Ulysses pegs will fit on other XB models. |

buelet: i have no xray machine handy, but the breakage showed plenty of holes in the taiwanese cast peg. i TIG welded the first broken peg together, then broke it a second time, in a slightly different spot. it is a quite porous casting. note that i stand on the pegs a lot, and have only managed to cause breakage when bike is dropped. |

American Sport Bike now has the foot peg bases for the XB-S style pegs with a 1" drop in them. They use the same LSL modular footpegs that the bases that we've been offering for a while use, but Banke machines these for us. They're a bit pricier than I'd like, but they are mirror image parts with 3 separate setups per peg. They mount as stock, using the springs and pin. I'll stand up on these without fear of falling. They don't fit the Uly at this time. The width of the normal pegs are just over 1" where they engage the frame. The Uly width is a hair over .850" wide. The Buell web site that lists the traction footpegs as fitting the Uly is in error, they do not. But we'll get these bases adapted to the Uly in time. I personally like round footpegs, and am not really crazy about the huge Uly paddle footpegs, so I've already modified a set of these and a 9112 base by milling them thinner so that I could put the LSL pegs as in the picture above on my Uly.
