Can anyone tell me if the frame on the XB12 gets hot from being in close proximity to the rear cylinder? If so, how bad is it? My R1 frame got so hot I couldn't touch it for more than a few seconds. thanks | ||

It gets pretty warm down there, but I've never been too uncomfortable, unless I've had to sit in traffic for a bit and then I can feel it on my right leg pretty good. Just riding on the interstate or in the twisties I never notice it. | ||

100 deg. heat here in TX and a few minutes of stop and go traffic your leg is toast.  Air flow is decent enough that you won't notice it at highway speed though. | ||

It can definitely carry some heat, but it's not really enough to cause a problem. If you ride in shorts you'll probably experience some discomfort, but while riding in jeans I've never had it hot enough to become an issue. There are some cases when riding in really nasty stuff where I want to leave my right leg a bit loose, but I've never seen it hot enough to actually cause a burn. This may sound funny, but I've noticed that the frame on my XB actually gets hotter after parking the bike for a while after a long ride on a hot day. | ||

I ride in shorts all the time, and no problems with heat. Its a little warm after a while but i dont get sweatycrotch like my Ducati gives me | ||

I agree, the right leg will scortch if your waiting in traffic for too long. Ive had a small irritation on my upper thigh becasue the heat has burnt my leg, and I ALWAYS wear pants while riding. I love my XB12R so much that I seem to look past it while riding. I have had no problems with engine heat, even after a thousand mile day, the frame is no more than warm. it contains the liquid fuel, so is absolutely limited in the temperature that can attain. the exact vapor pressure, and boiling point of gasoline varies considerably with georaphical region, and also with altitude, but in any case, any conditions in which a human being could reasonably be expected to survive while riding the Buell XB will not be hindered by the temperature of the aluminum frame. | ||

During the summer I dont notice it. When it gets colder/rainier its actually nice. The only times its a little irritating is when I am stuck in traffic with someone on the back, but that rarely is the case. | ||

On hot days during rush stop and go my inner thighs are toast. so hot it becomes extremely painful. I end up with red blotches on my legs that last for hours. The frame does get really hot near the rear cylinder but the heat that burns my legs is mostly from those holes on each side of my xb9r rear body work, the air flow is directed right onto the my inside thighs when the fan kicks on. I challenge anyone to ride my bike with shorts in those conditions, you will end up in E.R. with 1st or 2nd degree burns. (Message edited by firewhirl on September 24, 2005) | ||

Yeah... what Dean said... In any case, I've been in Tucson at 115 degrees in stop and go traffic. It does get quite hot but it's never been overbearing and I grew up in Alaska. | ||

Oh, and it's not really the frame. It;s the air coming off the rear header. If there's a breeze it no problem. HD's have always been likt this. | ||

HEY! THATS MY FAN!!(and its damn noisy like a rock stuck in it) I never burned my leg but I have burned my arm twice and my knuckle once,all on the header like a dumbarse. And that tech spec frame grip stuff is TOTAL crap,50$ for stuff that dont stick good AND you have to champfer the edges,plus you can buy the same stuff BY THE YARD at any home depot for ALOT cheaper. My new XB12Ss gets quite warm in stop & go traffic, but I've never experienced anything close to bodily harm as suggested above. I have ridden in shorts and flip flops at the beach (sorry Fullpower) without burning myself. It does get uncomfortable though. My XB9 didn't seem to be as hot but it was broken in, had synthetic oil and ceramic coated headers. I saw that right side air scoop at Liberty HD this weekend & I think I may get one. | ||

If the frame does get a little too toasty on your thigh, you might be a little low on gas. From my experience the frame stays noticably cooler on the right with it full of fuel. | ||

Someone on a sacborg ulysses forum said/did this:  The frame rails get pretty hot with the pipes and motor so close. I went to the local auto speed shop in Sacramento, CA. Picked up some pressure sensitive heat tape. (2000 degree stuff) and attached it to the inside of the frame rails. I also wrapped the rear exhaust pipe with exhaust pipe wrap. (From the head down about 4 inches). I've wrapped my headers, and I've noticed less heat. I've also got the carbon fiber frame protectors, I'm not sure if they help with heat at all. I want to get a right side air scoop next. | ||
