As reported by CSG_Inc (David Lundberg) on 25 August 2002...

Just got my copy of the Service Bulletin dated August 20 B-047. Re: Sidestand leg for 2003 model firebolt. As was stated earlier by somebody else here BMC has elected to replace all sidestand legs on XB9R motorcycles, manufactured through July 9th, 2002.

The new sidestand, part number L0167.02A8, will be available on or before August 21, 2002 for replacement of the old/obsolete part number L0194.02A8A (Problem part).

Thanks David!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THAHK YOU!
Mine fell right after starting it to warm up at about 1100 miles (1 month). Luckily I only lost a footpeg ($13) and a clutch lever ($13) I wonder if I'll get reimbursed by Buell for those.

Forgive me if I get a little misty-eyed. I just got my very first recall notice in the mail today. I now feel like a REAL BUELL OWNER!

Wait a minute Chainsaw but this is not a RECALL. This is in the interest of customer satisfaction BMC has decided to offer a new and improved sidestand. So far the XB9R has not had any RECALLS and lets keep it that way.

Yes Recalls (lawyer term) involve a safety risk (such as your drive chain ceasing to turn on the Busa). Hopefully the FB won't have any of those.

Now, now, let's be real here. Bikes falling over, bad kickstand design. Sounds like a recall to me. Welcome to the club Chain.

My dealer actually called me tonight to schedule an appointment to have the stand replaced.

Whoa! I was impressed!

Actually, I was excited to see on the caller ID when the phone rang, that it was the HD dealer. I thought the race kit had FINALLY arrived, but instead it was about the kickstand. SIKE!

I'm glad to see Buell and the local dealer's stepping up to the plate.

Regards,
Jody S.

Can a Firebolt stand be adapted to a tube model? My race bike had the stand lopped off and there are only so many walls to lean it against. It looks like it bolts to the bottom of the case, but there might have been changes in the casting to allow it.

Any ideas?

Get a race stand. Drill and tap the swing arm for buttons. I'd be surprised if your new toy doesn't have buttons on it already.

Snowdave is converting a purebred race bike into a street bike. He may not want to tote a stand around every where he goes. :] Kinda ironic when you see guys like us spending our cash on making our street bikes track worthy.

He could turn the buttons into a pivot for the stand. In the down position its a stand, flip it up, time to go! hehe
Maybe a look into bicycle kickstands would do the trick. The kind where 2 plates clamp the rear seat stays, so it can be removed for the track. Wish that's how they came anyway, what a pain getting that spring off.

Word to the dealers on this bulletin may not be getting out. My dealer's service manager has the other firebolt in town (yeah, mine is #2 in Nashvile) and he had not gotten the notice either. The parts are now ordered and Buell will cover the other parts I had to replace when it fell :)
Now, where are those aftermarket exhaust kits?

Has anyone gotten the revision 2 sidestand yet? Seems like the original service bulletin came out about 2 months ago.

2nd recall Notice dated October 16, 2002

Buell Motorcycle Company has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2003 Buell Firebolt XB9R motorcycles built from 8-6-02 through 9-4-02. THE SAME DEFECT may be present on any 2003 XB9R that has had a replacement side stand installed as part of Product Program BP8. The defect could cause the side stand to bend or break without notice, thereby allowing the notorcycle to fall and potentially cause injury or property damage.

I was notified as their records list my XB9R model involved as identified by my Vehicle Identification Number.

Buell strongly urges immediate replacement. Parts should be available the week of 10/14/02.

Still Waiting....
I wonder if they will give me any BS if I mod my original sidestand while I patiently wait for them to get the "upgrades" out. I've already had to order some replacements parts from the first fallover which my dealer said will be covered. I'd really hate to see a second fallover while waiting.
