So with over 1500 miles on my chain conversion and one bumpy a ss trip to brooklyn NY, I've been feeling pretty confident that the 9R will now take me anywhere without leaving me stranded.

So, I head out this morning from Orange Co. NY on the bike and head towark Merrimack NH.
When I stop for fuel in Lowell Mass. The bike doesn't want to re-start. It cranks but does not fire up.

After 3-4 minutes of looking at it, I try cranking it again and it fires right up, but I notice that the clock on my digital display has re-set itself to 1:00 and both my trip odometers are at zero miles.

I made it to Merrimack, picked up a muffler that I bought on ebay, and headed west on rt 101. When I get into Keene NH the bike stalls out. When I re-start it, again my clock is at 1:00 and my trips are at zero.

I top off my fuel and check my oil level while in Keene. I also check to see that my battery connections are tight.... they are.

I continue on heading west, at Bennington VT I notice the red "check eng" coming on and off. Then the bike starts popping loudly thru the muffler and stalling. The clock resets itself about 20 times in 5 minutes, and then everything clears up.

No more problems untill Kingston NY, where all the gremlins all show up at once and the stalling is worse than ever. The check eng light is flashing like a strobe light. It took me 2 hrs to get from kingston to Cornwall NY.

Where do I start? how can I retreive the code(s)? Any idears? I swear, just when I think it's safe to take the buell out, it burns me again! I was going to try to take it to Maryland next month for the Appalachian Adventure, but now I think I'd better follow closely behind Gentleman Jon and his trailer.

P.S. The good news is I now have 2200 trouble-free miles on the chain conversion.

I would be looking at poor ground connections or chaffing in the harness somewhere. I would also look at the battery, how old is it? Mine did the reset/trip thing as the battery was getting weak.

Just a couple thoughts, I am sure others will chime in!!

Saint... dont know if the diag software i have will work on reading the codes.. Dont see why not but we might want to try it anyway.. also can reset tps while were at it and see if it helps any. Let me know and I'll shoot on up. Working tonite but off tomorrow after 6pm. By the way mine did same thing after race kit put on.. turns out i reset tps wrong. could possibly be that your ecm got fubared somehow. Give me a shout 845-742-4938 if you want help with that thing

Low batt voltage will cause weird things to happen. also check the ground at the other end of the neg batt cable. good luck.

That's crazy because I just had the exact thing happen to me last thursday. Got so aggravated that I just parked the Buell till yesterday morning. Checked all grounds/powers ok. Took off airbox and found front plug wire worn through the idle adjust cable (Shorting out). Ended up getting an 8mm screaming eagle wire and 2 new plugs just haven't had time to repair and recheck. Also in the middle of cutting out the airbox lid for more air induction. Only have 6500 mile on her.

Ive had a problem with the clock reseting too but not the running prob. Alot of time if the bike sits for a a couple hours and i go to start it, it will crank not even a full turn and sound like it comes up on compression and cant get past it, then suddenly it will crank past it and fire. Just out of curiosity how long is typical life on the battery.

Remember guys. These batteries have a 2 year life span overall. 2 years, replace.

The Buell starter motors do not have an enormous amount of power for the displacement and compression involved. And when the engine is warmed up and the cylinder walls and stuff oiled up, the load is higher. My M2 often cranks slower when warm and the battery and electrics are all fine.

I notice that some of the guys with the big displacement motors on customs/choppers have compression releases fitted so they can get the engine past compression and spinning easily.

Glitch - Are you saying the starter overcoming the magnets in the stator are the issue on slow cranking? Or a weak battery? I thought the starter was fighting harder to overcome higher compression on a warmed up engine.

Congrats to Buellin_ri !

I took off the seat traced the Neg cable, and just to the left of the battery is/WAS a stud which had broken off of a black powdercoated bracket on the undertail.

There are two ground cables with eyelet terminals that were supposed to be attached to that stud, but with the stud snapped they were just danglin around in there occasionally touching but mustly just rubbin across one another.

Anyway, a new grade 8 bolt and a nyloc nut and I tightened the shi t out of them. Test ride for 12 miles shows no problems so far.

Good deal.. glad to hear it was an easy fix. by the way we have that ride in Port jervis this weekend... forgot who the hell were meeting there but we're goin to take whomever up to perkins rt6 and 218 if your up for it.

Hey guys dont mean to jack a thread but i just realised that when mine starts hard its usually after sitting for a couple hours, or over night. So mine is as cold as could be. Im kinda leaning towards the battery. It still the original and a i bought it as a left over in March of 04. Any thoughts?

Check out Reep's Diagnosing charging problems guide in the KV - it will take you through all the steps and let you very each component (battery, alternator, voltage regulator) logically.

I did a dumba$$ earlier this year by leaping to the conclusion that I had a 5 year old battery and needed to replace that. It did not fix the problem and when I did it right I found a bad voltage regulator.

To add insult to injury, I later mentioned the battery replacement to the guy I bought the bike from and he told me the battery I replaced was only two years old, not five. Grrr...
