Last summer, I would get some light pinging on a really hot (105*+) day if I was in city traffic. In an attempt to reduce the pinging and increase performance, I installed a TFI and for the most part accomplished both tasks. However, I was never able to get the TCI dialed in to my liking -- I didn't like the surge at 4K and especially didn't like the stumble while cruising if you slightly let off throttle then get back on it. At any rate, while performing my 10K service, I removed the TFI and restored the factory configuration. Now, I notice that even on a cool day -- around 72*, when fully warmed I get pinging -- about like it was on a really hot day before. Any suggestions? |

Haven't checked it recently. Didn't think it would change often enough to require it to be reset. I last performed it in July of '04. Check out my post here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/78049.html#POST284357 However, I was thinking of rechecking it just to be sure... Steve. |

Got your note Steve... reposting info... Sounds like my bike. I have the same setup, it's dialed in perfect, no more stumbles or surging but the damn ping is a mystery. My current TFI settings are 4 - 8:30 - 6 - 8:25 What were your settings with Drummer, Race ECM and TFI when you had everything on? BTW, my ping has been the same when bone stock and with mods. Never changes. Yesterday was nice 'n cool, i tried to add more fuel with pot 2 (adjusted up to 9 o'clock) but got the cough you mention when i went from cruising at mild speed then gave it a little gas to accelerate to the new posted limit. prob a 35MPH to 45MPH situation. slow speeds. so I went back down a bit on 2. ping was a little more mild when i had pot 2 at 9, it was definitely harder to reproduce. when its really hot out, it sucks bad. way more violent ping. I had been messing with the static timing over the past few months but finally took her in to get it done by a professional, along with a TPS reset, on the right equipment. My static timing was 8 degrees retarded. waaaay off. but surprisingly it was helping to get rid of the ping, thats why i was retarding in little increments. EDIT: something interesting I learned recently is that when you retard the timing plate (cam position sensor) you're not only changing the static timing but also removing fuel. this isn't good. i need more fuel when the motor is under load, not less. moving that timing plate was compounding my problem. the bike is running better than it ever has except for the ping. i've checked for intake leaks but i'm going to check again. she was definitely running super-hot because my fan would run nonstop no matter what the ambient temps out. with the timing correction to factory spec and TPS reset my fan is running much more normal now, only on when it needs to be. i'll pull in for gas now and notice its not running sometimes which is great. something improved. my ping is only when motor is under load coming away from a light, going up a hill (any gear, not bogging) or any time you decide to give it some good throttle. its only in a quick band for a few knocks. it still bugs the hell outta me though because i LOVE the torque the bike has. i never, ever lug it. I've also tried all kinds of plugs... stock, pro-series, NGK standard 9 series and now have NGK 9 series iridiums in. After my nice long ride yesterday I need to pull 'em again and inspect. I've become a pro at removing/installing the plugs in this bike. (Message edited by typeone on September 11, 2005) |

Clinton -- my TFI settings are 3:30, 7:30, 6:30, 8:30. Maybe I'll stick it back in with your settings to see what happens. As soon as I can get my cable back (lent it to a friend), I'll recheck TPS. Shouldn't have changed, but I did unplug it, so I suppose the contact resistance could have varied, and the battery was disconnected for two days... Who knows... |
