So I'm riding on the highway the other night on my way home from a buddy's place, when all of a sudden my back wheel squirms, locks up for a split second, then I hear grinding... I pull over to see what the hell happened, and my rear wheel bearing on the left side kicked the bucket!!! I get a buddy to help me load the bike in his pickup and we take it back home.... So I call my local H-D dealer, and talk to the girl from the "warranty" dept. and she tells me that wheel bearings are just like oil or brake pads and they are considered a regular maintenance item... I tell her that the new orange seal bearings have been on my bike for barley 5000 km's (bike has 10,000) and that I can't see why this happened... Is this a common issue? Am I wrong thinking bearings should last more than 5000 km? She asked me to email her pictures, and I am still waiting for a response... Eventhough my 9 is out of warranty, is there a "goodwill" warranty that would apply to this? Sorry about the rant, but man if I would've laid her down in the turn when she locked up, I would be six feet deep for sure, as there was a semi beside me in the other lane... Any input from dealer members would be great... Thanks in advance guys... | ||

I thought that like the drive belt they are on the list of Scheduled Maintainence. Though the belt can go 100k mi, it is said to be replaced at a certain given mileage. I noticed my new orange bearings starting to get surface rust on the outer cover. | ||

There does not seem to be any mileage indicator for things like bearings. I always check mine whenever I am having a new tire installed (the dealership should also be checking this when a wheel is off the bike). If the bearings are rotating freely when turned by hand (fingers, actually), they should (?) be alright. I have the original bearings (orange) still on my '03 9S with over 20,000 miles on them...doesn't seem to be a problem so far... | ||

I am curious about this too(need new tires...bad). here's what the service manual says(03'9S): Check front and rear wheel bearings for wear: * Every time a wheel is removed. * When storing or removing the motorcycle for the season. Check front wheel bearing: * At every 5000 mile(8000km) service interval. Check rear wheel bearing: * At every 10,000 mile(16,000km) service interval. Check wheel bearings for wear and corrosion. Excessive play or roughness indicates worn bearings. Replace bearings in sets only. | ||

Eventhough my 9 is out of warranty, What color is the seal on the bearings? Orange means they are the upgraded bearings Black means that they were suppossed to have been replaced under recall. If you look in the Knowledge Vault under wheels, you will find replacement numbers you can give to any bearing supply (Napa, autozone bearing supply depot etc) to purchase new bearings without paying the cost through the dealer. Even high quality bearings like Timken and SKS are available at half the cost of the stock bearings through the dealer. BTW, this has been covered numerous times, just do a search for "Wheel bearings" or look in the knowledge vault. |
