I just changed out my battery on my 03 XB9S... Original lasted 35 months. It was still able to turn bike over but just barely.. Anyway, I pick a new battery from my dealer get back home open the box - only to find that they gave the wrong battery (they gave me the battery for a 2001 tuber lightning..) Bummer, drive back to dealer get the correct battery - I'm happy, this should take no more than 10 minutes to swap out.. Boy was I wrong... That rubber battery retainer strap comes off real easy... But it sure don't go back on easy.. I'm no puss (260lbs), it took me 20 minutes of pulling and grunting before I was able to get lucky and get the darn thing hooked back up... I was literally dragging the bike up and backwards pulling on this strap. It seems to be a little overkill on the tension of this strap. All they need is another 1/4-1/2" on the strap and this whole caper would have been unnecessary... Anybody else encounter this problem??

You have to use the angle part of the clip to lever it on, hook the anble part and then slip it on. Took 30 seconds.

Took me a while too. Needle nose vise grips did the job but still tricky.

Huh? I'm still not sure what you're saying.. I tried like every conceivable manipulation of the clip and strap... with no luck other and just getting lucky... Of course the service manual says nothing about it.... got any illustations on just how to do this?

Kevin, try like this:
Pull the strap extra long, across the corner of the battery with one hand.
Pinch the strap against the battery at the corner with your other hand. Don't put fingers between the battery and the strap, that just makes you have to stretch it further.
If you stretched it far enough to begin with, you'll have enough slack to play with to get the bale latched onto the hook. Took me a while before I figured it out too. Once I did it this way, it went right on.

I tell you what, I'm not going to take it off to practice... what a "stretch" that would be... I kill myself sometimes....
