There will be a race kit for them but go figure, they are on back order(@#**@@#@&***) I have 5 riders waiting for them right now. I can get you one when they actually start to send them to the dealers. List price is 619.95 I'm doing a 10% discount on about anything Badwebbers need.

Oh, yeah, speaking of lighter internal parts, as an exercise, can anyone tell me what all would be involved in putting lighter pistons and rockers in the 'bolt so it could rev quicker? While it seems faster than the 1203ccs, there's still a spot in there while it thinks about what you just told it. Not sure if I'll ever get around to actually doing this, but I'd like to know (since I'm just getting into this whole modification world, myself).

Thanks, guys,
Bryan

Sorry about that...had trouble posting...
Harleybritt asks a good question. Can a 'bolt be painted? All I know about "surlyn" is it was developed a a golf ball covering. Could one of you paint program gurus show me a Firebolt in yellow?
On the rider talent thing. I've always enjoyed dusting squids on the killer race-rep-du-jour, while riding an "inferior" bike. I've always joked that Freddie Spencer on a Vespa could kick all our butts. After 20 years of saying that, I went down to Stone Mountain Harley to test ride a Firebolt. Out front, warming up next to the 'bolt, is a Fatboy. I'm thinking "great, I'm gonna have to stay with a Fatboy". Then I discover my salesman is none other than Scott Zampach! Have you ever seen a Fatboy backed into corners? I truely fell in love with the 'bolt, but I was also humbled and reminded that we can all beat 9 of 10 regardless of what they're riding, but beware that 10th guy (or girl, I suppose).

Java. . . we love ya, but I'm betting on The "Z Man" on this one. The guy is nothing short of incredible. Doesn't he seem like the guy that ought to have an arrogant attitude? Has always thrown me for a loop, the each time you see the guy he's the nicest guy in the world and makes you feel like he's YOUR fan!

You can paint the surlyn, just make sure your painter knows his stuff. You have to add the right mixture of thinner, bonder, elastic (stuff to make the paint flexible) and they will have to have the surface prepped. There is a pic of a black bolt floating around in here, also in the new Fuel mag there is a Japanese Buell dealer that painted one like the old X1 race stripe.

Yeah, Court, at first, I was just worried about wadding up their bike (worlds shortest wheelbase, worlds biggest front brake, aaaah!). Then I relaxed, and just watched Scott. Wow. And when we get back, he compliments me on how well I ride. Please. Any way, gotta have that bike. Now, which one of my kids could I get the most for......

Oops, sorry, Spidey. Thanks for the info on the paint. Do you remember which issue of Fuell that was in? Since I don't own a Buell yet (sorry), I haunt the dealers waiting room looking at them!

Just got my service manual Thursday, ordered it in April, so they are available.
I noticed in the manual the XB has reed valves off the crankcase and PCV valves for crankcase ventilation. Did any previous buell engines have this system?

Question for the smart guys (Aaron or?) in the above dyno chart for the race kit why would the torque numbers fall below stock from 4000 to 4700 rpm. I would have thought the curve would have been a nice single hump with no dips from 3000 to 5000.

Anyone have a sound clip?

When and if anyone gets the race kit muffler installed on an XB, I would really like to hear what it sounds like before I drop $300 bucks!

Hey XB9!
I've yet to find a service manual in Denver.
Could you summarize for me the procedure to adjust the Throttle Position Sensor? Been doing my own maintenance, but I missed that one at 1k. (currently at 1500 miles)

Thanks!

You'll have to take it to a Dealer for the TPS set - you need the "Digital Technician" scanner that only the Dealers have.

XB9

the reed valve is new to the XB engine. The PVC breather was seen on the blast first.

Hey anonymoose,

Does that race kit come with a new header or does it use the stock one?

Anyone catch the roadtest of the XB9R on Motorweek? What, you don't watch PBS?
They may show it on Speed, so check your local listings.

Was going to make a movie for you, but it would have turned into 100's of meg. Did capture a few frames for you though.

Their only complaint was the fit of the seat cowl and that the pipes got kinda funky lookin' after a couple thousand miles down range.

Good press -- maybe Buell can broadcast it on their site. Here's the transcript and a few more frames:

OK, so it's not a 2002, but you can't be right all the time.

By the way, here's the '98 S1W test.

I think the race muff is one ugly biatch. I like the Pro Thunder pipe much better. I wonder how the weight compares to the stocker. You'd think from all the pre-release hype that the kit would have bigger performance gains.

Cross posted from Sacborg, by Reg Kitrelle:

Quote:

There comes a critical point in the growth of a company. Particularly a company that was founded around the passion for the item that it manufactures. That point is when the focus changes from making the best possible product to making the best possible profit. Harley has reached and passed that point. This is where the demands of the investors take precedence over those of the customer. That is why we have the motor we do in the XB. Somewhere in the not-to-distant past someone at HD came up with the idea of developing a single motor family for the Blast, the XB and soon, the Sportster. I'm sure this brilliant plan had the financial end of the company all a twitter with excitement. The price for this bit of corporate shortsightedness and arrogance will have to be paid: 9Rs have not met their sales objectives, and interest in the 9S is something less than overwhelming.

Saddlebags...LOL...maybe some other day. I was hoping that the dual outs on the exhaust were on opposite sides. Looks like I got my wish. Looks pretty sweet, but I guess I'll have to see/hear/feel it on my bike before I'll really know.

I must say I'm unimpressed with the torque curve using the race kit. Isn't the whole point of this powertrain midrange torque? I'm sure that it'll pull harder earlier looking at the tq and hp curves on it, but I don't particularly want a dead zone in the middle of the meat that drops below stock. Any ideas on how those of us who bite it and get the race kit could fix that without necessarily losing the increased low-end?

I'd say a muffler shop and an automotive glasspack or Supertrapp would fix the exhaust right up...and cheaply. I'm surprised Buell didn't come out with a full system, though.

IMO the perfect XB would've been one with a 9S styled front end and a 9R tail. I wonder how much is interchangeable between the two.

Rick,

I'm seriously considering the opposite, actually. A XB9S tail section but keeping the XB9R front fairing. I like being able to get my head out of the wind on the freeway and drag strip.

Spidy...That's what I thought (or was hoping for). I will have another Buell in my future (no time soon), but right now it'd be a hard choice between X1 and XB9S. Anyway, I have plenty of time to plan ahead and think about it (a couple years!).

Bryan...from what my friends tell me their faired sportbikes don't offer much more wind protection than the little Buell flyscreens...at least up top. I couldn't say for myself, though. I've never rode a faired bike. I don't care to, either...might spoil me
