How much is everyone paying for getting a new rear tire mounted? Thats figuring that you bring the rim to the dealer. | ||

The reason i`m asking is that i was at the HD/Buell dealer yesterday looking for a new rear tire. First they quoted me a price of $239.00 for a Dunlop tire and then said it would cost another$35.00 to mount the tire if i brought them the rim. Now maybe i`m cheap, but that seemed alittle high. In the past when i rode Jap bikes the dealer wouldn`t even charge me to mount the tire, assuming that first i purchased the tire from him. I`ve seen tech`s mount tires in just a few minutes. So i go home and go to discount tire.com and buy the same Dunlop tire D208ZR on sale for $105 with free shipping and i`m going to get it mounted at the Suzuki dealer for $15.00. Is it any wonder that more people don`t buy Buell with dealers like this? | ||

$30 at an independant shop. All they do is mount MC tires, don't even sell 'em anymore. | ||

The place I buy my tires from charges $10 to mount and balance if the wheel is off the bike. Your HD pricing sounds about like what I was quoted. Just remember, HD also stands for "hundred dollars" which is usually the minimum you can spend before getting out of the dealership. By the way, I bought Dunlop 208's front and rear for under $250 for both!  | ||

I don't know how much our local Buell shop charges as I will not set foot in there...However, a closer HD dealership will mount and balance for us for free if the wheels are off the bike...  Larry | ||

I own a Bandit 1200 for now and I made the mistake of taking it to the dealer I purchased the bike from. 7 days and $325.00 later I got my bike back. They charged me $90.00 to mount it(hour and a half labor). I called the local HD Buell dealer(also a Kawasaki dealer) and they charge $35.00 (half a hour labor). The Suzuki dealer is a as* hole which is one of the reasons I will be getting a Buell in the near future. | ||

Changed my tires recently, did the whole thing myself. Had to buy a set of tire irons (around $20 for a set of three) and about $10 worth of hardware to make a beadbreaker and mounting stand--but now I have that stuff ready for the next tire change. One advantage is I don't have to trust my bike (or parts of it) to anyone else! | ||

Koote- Could you post a picture of your tire changing rig, or refer me to a previous post? I am getting a bit tired of the hassel and the rip off every time I change sticky buns. I would like to know how you do it, and I bet many other members would too. | ||

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that Dunlop 207s and 208s bought from HD-Buell dealers are about 4 pounds lighter than the same tires bought elsewhere. I heard only yesterday (at a terrific suspension tuning seminar at Danbury CT, HD-Buell) that Erik Buell made the light tires a part of the deal he made with Dunlop since he was serious about lowering unsprung weight. minor spelling fix (Message edited by reepicheep on August 21, 2005) | ||

The Pirelli Scorpions are suprisingly light as well. And they were a bear for the tech to mount, so I don't know if that was particular to the tire, or just bad luck. | ||

That wouldn't surprise me, actually. I can't get over how thin the D207's are. There's not a lot of meat there at all. I currently have a slow leak on my rear tire that just seems to have been a small air bubble in the tire, and with about 0.125" left over the wear indicators it's letting air through. Wow.... | ||

$15 at a local Yamaha, Honda dealer if I buy the tire from them. Their prices are just as good if not better than mail order. The Tire guy at the track mounts for $10. | ||

my HD/Buell dealer said $28 if I bring in the rim and tire, but neglected to tell me it had to be a dunlop. So I took my Diablo Strada and rim to a local no-name shop who charged $30 to mount and balance. | ||

The dealers around my area don't like it one bit if you buy your tires somewhere else,and want them to mount and balance them.I was told of one Honda shop near me that flat out refuses to mount any tires that are not purchased from them!(I don't know this for a fact,I was told not to bother going there)What I'm finding out is that I can buy tires a whole lot cheaper than at a dealer,but I can't get them mounted without getting into a fight about it.Does anyone out there in the southern New Hampshire/Mass.area know of any dealers who will mount and balance tires? I would gladly take the wheels off the bike first.Anybody??  | ||

What's with Buell/HD Dealers and DUNLOPS... Do they get a kick-back for selling them ???? or is there something were just no told. The dealer here would ONLY fit DUNLOPS... nothin else... wouldn't even fit another brand. Well, NO SALE.. Strange how they can turn away business.. C R A Z Y | ||

Back on topic. In San Berdo I found a local racer that owns an autoshop and he will mount and static balence for $15.00 a tire. and tapes down the weights. He also sells the Battle axe bt14's for almost the same price as Chapperal. | ||

Gentleman Jon, I'll try to post up a few pics here of the rig I used. I'd recommend reading this website first--everything you gotta know and then some! The beadbreaker hinges on a gate hinge screwed to a wall stud; the stand is a plastic bucket with a threaded rod running through a hole in the bottom pinning it to the pallet (the bucket fits inside the brake disc on the front rim); the balancing stand is two levels on sawhorses, shimmed level so the axle can roll easily in either direction. Other tools you'll need are an air compressor and a large vocabulary of epithets, curses, and swear words, which come in handy during all kinds of mechanical work. The last pic is, of course, a graphic description of why we change tires...     | ||

WOW $272 for one rear tire moutned if *YOU* bring them the rim? That's insanely expensive. I got a PAIR of Scorpion Syncs installed on my bike(they took the rims off), for $289. I did have to do a pretty serious burnout for 'em to get this price  | ||

You can find tires new a lot cheaper on the web, including shipping, than you can from most dealers. Did mine recently and it was $20 each to mount and balance. The shop charged $40 each if they pulled the wheels off, independent cycle shop. I've had some shops give me a hard time about bringing in outside tires but most are happy to have the business. | ||

My local shop did mine for 20 bucks, but I won't go back again. I had them do the rear tire, and when I got it home and was putting it on I finally noticed how much they tore up the paint on the wheel. It was a mess. I would double check that before you brought it home. | ||

$45.00 R/R and balance at the local Honda/Yamaha dealer. They match Chapparrels tire pricing and I bring in the wheels removed from the bike (they won't wrench on a Buell). I won't let Chapparrel (5 miles away) do it. My reasoning, you get what you pay for. A minimum wage part swapper or a reasonably paid MMIT technician. The difference, the tech handed me back my wheels with no weights on them that were perfectly balanced. He said most motorcycle wheels don't need weights you just rotate the tire on the rim to find the balance point and your done. He then put them back on the high speed balancer to prove his point. Also if you go to a local shop check your rear tire to make sure they mounted it in the correct direction. I don't think most shops realize it's a right side drive wheel, I had to have one remount it one time. | ||

$275 to mount with them on the bike. The dealer would not bring in the Diablo's, so I bought them myself and took them to the dealer. They then told me that they charge a flat rate of 3 hrs @ $78 / hour for this change over. So including the price of the tires it cost me $640. I was told that even with them off the bike they would charge $50 / wheel as I didn't buy the tires (that they don't carry) there. OUCH ! I think I'll just wait for race days and take my wheels to the track. They only charge $10 / wheel to mount em! |
