i took my brother-in-laws bike for a quick spin today, and again(this is the second time i rode it) it's making a popping noise in the airbox. is this a common problem on these xb's? how do i fix this? is this something that will blow the engine like an intake leak on a carbbed tuber? any help will be greatly appreciated. |

btw, this is a 2003 xb9r with low miles. it has a cherry bomb exhaust and k&n, not sure about ecm. where is the ecm located anyway? |

You need to remove the front fairing to get at the ecm. |

Tripp... I cannot remember if it was my 9 or 12 but I used to get this a lot when my bike was new. I never did anything to fix it and have not heard it in a long time. |

TRIPP; Mine has done this also, it was due to the fact I gave the throttle a quick pump'n'release when first fired up or in low idle. Yeah she pops back through the airbox (throttle body), in the 2 years I have had my bike it's only happened about 6 times. No real drama.. |

Mine pops alot like that when it doesn't like the gas. I've got a bad tank in there now, and it pops like crazy, even stalled twice yesterday. Time to find a new station. I'm down to two in a 20 mile radius that I have found to have consistant good gas. One Shell, and one Mobil. |

i've got the factory race kit and the race ecm. also the 12 airbox. i get some poping when i decelerate more so on a quick downshift. i've heard that its fairly normal and my dealer said not to worry. |

I used to get some real violent pops out of my 03 9r... like an M-60 went off in the airbox but once I started adding a touch of octane boost I havn't had the problem... It was a while back but I think my stock plugs had something to do with it also... I bought the splitfires??? why I don't know but they seem to be working great... I do get some poping when I downshift though... |

its popping because the fuel injection is the most primitive piece of garage on the market...the tps has no idea was going on when you burp the throttle, so it tells the ecm to dump fuel in at a incorrect rate causing an intake backfire...kinda like a carburated lawn mower (actually my honda mower performs better than my 2004 XB12S..sad) |

Get a clue Five-oh... It'll do that a little until it gets warmed up. Also, keep in mind that your VE may be quite a bit lower/higher than with a stock exhaust and probably follows a different curve through the rev range. The AFV will tune itself for whatever the VE is at roughly 3000-3500 RPMs (While the bike is running closed loop). The ECM still thinks you have a stock pipe of course so it doesn't know that your VE isn't where it thinks it should be at the low range. This will cause various problems whether it's rich or lean... The best solution would be a PCIII (because I would imagine it's rich with that exhaust pipe). |

hey M1...you are absolutely right....but the bike did it with the stock pipe as well....and for you last comment....dynojet power commander pulled every last unit they sell for buell's because they dont work. do some market analysis before you make dumb statements |

"do some market analysis before you make dumb statements" Get some experience before you make dumb statements. I run a PCIII and it works just fine . You just have to do it right and use the O2 sensor. The problem was un-trained people tuning the entire map. The user would then call Dyno-Jet and complain so DJ decided it wasn't worth the trouble. You have to leave the cells that are lower than 3K RPM AND lower than 20% throttle alone. |

M1, That is the info I was waiting for!! You have to leave the cells that are lower than 3K RPM AND lower than 20% throttle alone. Since I can't find a MAP for a XB9 to start with, now I have a starting point. Thanks for all you're help! Rob. |

they no longer sell them was my point .....buell fuel injection is as good as a carb, that's it |

M1, 2003 9S, opened air box, De-snorkel, K&N, Force Gen 1 pipe, TFI for now. Have the PCIII with the O2 sensor, but not installed yet. Just don't want to burn a piston. The dyno shop in my city won't tune it, so I would have to ride about 80 miles for dyno time. |

My 9R pops and even stalls cold. No major mods just race kit and a cut 12r airbox. Work with fuel injection everyday on cars. The buells fuel injection system is primitave compared to the systems I have worked on, but I don't know how it compares to other systems on bikes. But I imagine the japs have a better system. I love my buell, but I know they are ahead of us on some of the technology. |
