My battery is not charging. I guess its the stator, as the voltmeter indicated the battery is same voltage with bike running as off. I searched the board but found nothing but a bwb bro said he thought he read somewhere on here about others with this problem. All help appreciated..How much for a new stator if not fixable? |

Mine was fixed under warranty. Don't remember what it would have cost. That was almost 20thousand miles ago. Do you smell burnt trans fluid? If the battery isn't charging. Check the simple first. All cables nice and tight? Regulator checks out? Did you looks in the Knowledge Vault for some answers? |

Vegasbro - Check out Reepicheep's electrical trouble shooting guide in the KV - solid gold info! If you have not checked the output from the alternator you should do that. That will tell you if the problem is the stator or the voltage regulator. Jack |

Mine's in the shop right now for the same trouble . Was in the shop just 3000 miles ago with a dead charging system. Stator is around $130 Voltage regulator is about $80 Service manual has a bunch of troubleshooting tests to find the source of the trouble. Everything tested good on mine, I changed regulator, still doesn't charge. Hopefully the professionals can fix it, I have the Extended warranty till 2006. |

Stators (alternator) seems to be the thing that keeps going on these motors. I ought to modify the procedure to check that first... |

I was told when I carried mine in to the dealer that the stator was the weak point for all Sportster engines. |

Mine's been in the shop since last Tuesday. They are still waiting for the stator to be shipped. I have 9600 miles on my bike. |

Anybody have experience with aftermarket bits? Doesn't Accel or somebody make one? The factory part is pretty expensive for a sub 20k mile part. |

Mine died at 20,000. I'm thinking the one I have now will last longer. Since they share the tranny oil, it may have something to do with the metal bits that go with breaking in the tranny. |

Do you think that changing the tranny oil often would help the stator live longer? Using synthetics? |

Won't hurt. I've used synthetics since I hit 500 miles, in the tranny and engine. |

I made the switch at 500 miles as well. Nevertheless, I am bikeless after 8 days now. They say the part is definitely arriving manana. |

Around 18,000 on mine. You will know if it's a stator, open the primary inspection cover and if you gag from the smell it's the stator. |

Xb9jelly9s - Did you take the plate over the wires off yet? It looks heat discolored between the screws and I'm wondering if a short there lead to the overheated and fried windings. I read in the KV that shorts have been known to occur there. I had the alternator off my M2 recently and smoothed the edges on that plate and put a gentle curve up and away from the wires on each side. The plate does not put any clamping force on the wires, it just keeps them back out of the way. I was considering putting a short piece of oil resistant wire sheathing around the wires under the plate to provide just a little clamping force and some additional chafing protection. But in the end I did not do it. Jack |

Jack-This happened a few months ago and no I did not even see that but i still have the stator and the wires look fine. I'll be sure to smooth out the edges on that if I ever have it apart again. Thanks, Jeremy |
