Before I start,I do have an appointment for my XB9SX for service. My engine light comes on but runs ok.The dealer corrected the error reading but on the way home it lit up again. The dealer said to bring it in for a more in depth analysis. She said it might be the O2 sensor but don't know for sure till they tear trough the bike. I ran to go get coffee and go to the book store. She's running ok,power ok.But when I got off the bike at the house I noticed my headers are purple in color near the heads. Is this something I should be concerned about? Is it turning purple near the head and running slightly down the bend of the header? If so that would be normal. Course, it's more of a blue tint that purple, but mine is the same. Pick up some Eagle One Mag and Aluminum polish or Mothers Mag and Aluminum use some paper towels and rub away. Will clean that up really nicely. |

Thats what happens when you heat steel up to about 1200*F Perfectly normal. |

Actually, if your pipe is getting that hot, (1200F) it's going to glow slightly when hot and after it cools it will look opaque grey. Bluing happens between 300F and 700F and the temperature determines the color. Basically it's just the oxygen (air) oxidizing the surface layer of the metal. Colors will range from light straw yellow to intense blue, purple, pink and such. I have a chart that roughly correlates color to temperature (for low and medium carbon steels) if you would like me to post it. |

Yes,I am. If my motor is running real hot then my check engine should start flashing and the ECM will retard the ignition a bit so it will not over heat.At the same time I'll loose power when the ECM retards the ignition.Which is not happening at all. I guess I'll find out after the dealer gets done with it next friday. For the meantime I'll be riding my KTM 950 Adventure which is another bike I enjoy very much. Redster |

Yea, Skeenix, put it up! Anyone know the actual alloy of the steel? |

Nadz, here is an online version of the chart that matches what I have. Notice that it is for plain carbon steels. http://www.anvilfire.com/FAQs/temper_colors.htm |
