Thanks again for all the great advice from my last post. Got the tender, charged the battery, the bike started. Now it won't hold a charge. A local repair guy thinks its some doohicky(can't remember the name) not the whole charging system. He thinks he can use a H-D part and will find out Monday. What do the pros think? This forum being the pros, do ya think i could chase down this problem myself? I'd like to save money on labor if possible. Please help! |

Sounds like your stator is dead or your voltage regulator. Can't remember how to check either. |

check here http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/54010.html?1107789974 quick recap; easy check's; grouding off the stator ( 3 wires out off the engine, measure with a dvm for ground ( one terminal from the dvm on the engine casing )on those 3 wires, when one or more wire's are grounded, your stator is toast ) ps. disconnect the grey ( 3 black wires ) connector to the regulator easy check for regulator; leave the black connector inplace ( black and red (2)wires ) use a light bulb for testing !! not the dvm !! and see if you have current on the wire's out off the regulator ( grey ( 3 black wires )connector still disconnected ) if your light bulb burn's on one ore more wires your regulator is toast if all is good, get your selfes a repair manual to follow the flow sheet on charging gr, b ps. my toasted stator ps2 use a good dvm |

Rubdoggy, Do you have a voltmeter? if not buy one (Radio Shack has an inexpensive digital version) then you can do a simple charging system check by attaching the meter leads the battery terminals while your bike is running and read the DC voltage at the battery terminals. You should read more than +13.5 vdc. You can also use it to check the condition of your batteries state of charge. If your XB is an 2003 model your battery is probably toast, the OEM battery doesen't seem to last much over 2 years if that. I think the heat from the fan and the bikes inherent vibration lead to the batteries demise. Thats a small price to pay for all the fun an XB provides. |

Suprisingly, we have seen many more blown stators then dead batteries. Those Harley absorbed glass mat batteries are pretty darn durable. They do fail, but not as often as the stators. |

I'm on my second stator and 3rd voltage regulator. Still have my original battery (June 2002), just can't kill that thing. |

Is there an aftermarket stator we can get? It just seems these stators are not holding up. I could be wrong though. |
