My beautiful amber wheels always seem to be covered in black brake dust and road grime. I can never seem to get them totally clean. Is there something I can use to get the them clean without damaging the finish on the wheels? | ||

Yeah, I've been using dupont teflon wheel cleaner, but any brand of automotive wheel cleaner will work too. I just get an old wash mitt (not the one you clean the rest of your bike with) dampen it with water, wring it out, and douse some of the cleaner on the mitt and wheel and go to town. Some of them are a little harsh so try a little spot first. And to finish up, try using a brake dust repellent. Rain X used to make some good stuff but I can't find it anymore. Now I use michelin brake dust repellent and have had good luck. | ||

Brake dust repellant? I'll have to find that stuff... and wash my bike. I'm not very regular at doing that, washed it three times maybe in 5000 miles? I'm a bad person, but she gets ridden. Since the finish is powder coat, unless you really scrub it with a brillo pad or something, it'll hold up. | ||

Does 'brake dust repellant' really work??? Sounds like a good idea if it does... I use 409 on my wheels and haven't had a troubles yet, I use it on the center of my chin fairing too... Kevin | ||

"any automotive wheel cleaner will work" Not quite true. Last weekend while detailing my bike I used Black Magic no scrub wheel cleaner. Says it will remove brake dust from all wheels. While this may be true, it also removes the clearcoat. The clearcoat turned instantly cloudy and despite frantic efforts to wash and wipe it off the damage was done.  It took me two hours and two green scrubber pads to remove the screwed-up clearcoat. Now every time I detail the bike I have to polish the wheels.  } | ||

I use a bottle brush, a toilet bowl brush and a dish scrubber... | ||

I use Simple Green, some water, sponge and a paint brush to get into the corners. | ||

I never throw away old tooth brushes. they are great for cleaning things like...hmmm, let's see...Motorcycles? I prolly have about a dozen of them in my garage. |
