Hey All,

Browsed the KV and just got worried and confused.

I always thought the Buell engines (XB12 in particular) were 'unit' construction? I thought this meant the trans was lubed with the engine oil. But I saw references (KV) to filling the trans, and primary.

Is it just the engine and trans share a case, but their lube is separate?
Cheers,
Joe

Joe,

Yes, the engine and trans share a case but not their lube. I suspect this is a good thing, because you can pick the optimum lubricant for each job rather than having to pick a compromise which works in both.

Engine oil is one system. Transmission, clutch and primary drive are another. Just two systems total. Nice thing now is that the transmission/clutch/primary system now has a 10,000 miles drain interval. Engine is still 5,000 miles.

Big twins have THREE flavors of juice.
Engine, primary, and tranny

That's just evil.

umm here is a stupid question.....

Where is the fill/drain for the Trans fluid? I bought my XB9R used and the owner could not find the manuals. My guess is that it is time to change that fluid!!!1

Where is the fill/drain for the Trans fluid?...

Below the derby cover to the right of the kickstand. Fill thru derby cover. Should take about 1 quart.

All,

Thanks. That clears things up. Hopefully, I'll be wrenching on a XB12X if I like it after a ride.

Natexlh1000,
Yea 3 separate areas to deal with. I switched to Syn 3 in all of them. Course, I still change them frequently.
