Hey all, new to this board. I'm going to check out an '03 XB9r in a week and a half. It's got 6K miles and looks to be in good shape (via photos). Anything you can suggest I look out for while I do my walk around? Thanks for any and all suggestions that come my way. |

First is damage of course. Check the peg feelers, bar ends, levers and swingarm for scrapes that would indicate the bike has been down. Wheel bearings, seals should be orange, if the are black you will need new bearings Kickstand, should have a R on the foot when looking down at it in the down position Owners manual, that way you can set up the suspension |

And if you have not heard one of these things running before, try not to panic. They make all sorts of alarming noises at idle. |

In addition to what Daves mentions regarding damage, include in his list careful inspection of the Frame itself for damage. If there are after market stickers on the frame, forks or swing arm, you should consider that they might be there to hide things. If it appears that the Buell frame pucks have just recently been added, it is possible that they are being used to hide a dent in the frame Also check out the end of the mirrors, they too will show indications of an accident or even just tipping over.. If they have been replace altogether that might be an indicator too. Understand that if a bike just falls over while stationary it will show marks on things like the mirrors and blinkers, usually not more (though on some bikes the handle bar ends can dent the tank or frame. But be more concerned if the bike shows signs that it has been laid down due to an accident versus just falling over. Usually there is a difference between such damage. Check the front forks for obvious fork seal leaks. Will leak fork oil. Shouldn't be an issue with just 6,000 miles, unless the bike has been damaged, or ridden extensively on one wheel without the skill to bring the bike down softly. The wheel bearing and kick stand were to be replaced due to potential warranty issues, so if you are buying from a HD /Buell dealer I would press them to replace them for free as part of the deal If it is a personal sale, call Daves he can provide you with prices and maybe you can negotiate that issue into a reduction of the asking sale price Also, check out the condition of the bolts on the bike. If they are all real rusty it might be an indicator that the bike has been left outside versus keeping it in the garage or carport...or maybe not cared for to the degree that some like to do for their bike |

Thanks guys... I'll keep this in mind. A couple of points you noted that I wouldn't have thought about. The kickstand... This is a private sale... so I did know of one of those recalls but not the other). Nothing on this bike in the pictures, no stickers... none, looks nice and clean. |
