West point/Cornwall area.

BTW marcus dairy sucked! Only saw 1 other XB, was a red 12R. They wanted $12 bucks to get in!
Screw that, I hopped the fence & snuck in. Glad I did too, if I had paid 12 bucks to gain access to the 7 rows of doo-rag vendors I would have been pissed.

Saint what were you on? Passed a newer lightning on my way there ( about a mile or so) also saw the red 12R parked on the way in. 12 bucks was high but got in free anyway. Didnt care for anything there but did come across an older x-1 numerous mods and 1200 miles for 8 grand. on way out saw another XB9 but thats about it. Enjoyed walking the lots lookin at different bikes and mods other than that was a waste of time. Was a great ride though. Stopped by Newburgh waterfront on way home another Lightning there very nice and well taken care of too. couldnt locate the owner though. By the was Saint I work in Newburgh we should get together and go for a ride. Kill Storm King and maybe head out to 44/55 and Hawks Nest.

Yellow one was mine. No sneaking opened wallet for cash and I get "oh go right in officer" who am I to complain. Mrs was happy with that to $24 more for her to spend. Rock Tavern right there on 207 where abouts are ya (from Scully's) I'm actually in Middletown but work in Newburgh and am always up for riding

Mine was the blue 9R which was parked just behind and to the left of the red 12R.

Yeah, the ride over 218 (cornwall to westpoint) is one of my favorites. 44/55 from Gardiner to Kerhonksen is sweet too! I'm not a big fan of that hawks nest bit on 97 thought, it's the most over-rated over talked about 3/10'ths of a mile stretch of road I've ever wasted the time to check out. 218 is just as twisty but lasts for nearly 4 miles!

Furthermore, if you take 218 south to west point & then go thru Fort Montgomery to the Bear Mtn bridge, cross over the Hudson to Rt. 6 south.
Rt 6 is HAIRY from the bridge all the way to Peekskill.

I'm usually at the Bear Mtn. Inn on wednesday nights for the huge bike & car show. You guys should check it out, It's every Wed. from 6-9 PM. Huge bike turnout! We could take a ride from there.

Will be there Wed.. never did the 218 route and I currently reside in Stony Point pass it every day. go figure. One day if the wife lets me move back in I can live in the house I pay for. Will look for the blue xb on wed night.

if you know where the post office is for rock tavern on 207, i'm directly across the street. always wondered if i was in the wrong place for "hawks nest", it seemed so weak compared to rt6 by bear mtn and 218 at west point.

Cant compare.. havent ridden 218 or 6. Hawks Nest does continue from that short run above the water but its a ways down boring ride till you get there. Will have to check out 6 and 218. anyone want to give me a tour? Yeah I know where the post office is there seems nice and quiet there although pulling out of your deiveway in the A.M. must be a nightmare with the traffic haulin through there.

getting out is tough, especially in a box truck that does 0-60 in about a week. i'm definetly up for a tour, rt6 & 218 are "buell" roads, probably the only better bike would be a full on super-motard. the odd part is you actually don't even have to speed, just maintain the speed limit and you'll get some impressive lean angle. rt6 is a "mini" deals gap, if you have truly never been on it then it is a must! might be the single best piece of asphalt in a 100 mile radius. let me know when is a good day/time and we can all meet up in cornwall for a "tour".

"always wondered if i was in the wrong place for "hawks nest", it seemed so weak..."

Mike, That's so funny that you said that! After hearing every wannabe, once-upon-a-time, johnny come lately who ever had a bike, talk about the legendary "hawks nest" for years, I finnally mapquested it & sought it out two years ago.

When I made it through the Port Jervis traffic and finally started up the hill on 97 I was psyched! I was expecting the best ***king road that had ever present itself to me. I passed the sign that says "Hawks Nest" and my adrenaline started flowing.

500 feet and maybe 3 or 4 curves later it was over! I first thought that there must be more ahead. I continued on ... and on .... and on.... but there was nothing but lame straights! I continued all the way up to Pond Eddy before turning arround.

I thought I must have missed it or I'm in the wrong place! That couldn't have been what all those bo-bo's were talking about! But it is!

I just dont get it, anyone who thinks that the "hawks nest" is all that, would probably have coronary failure if they ever rode 218 or 6.

P.S. try to check out the show Wed.

what time does the show usually run? where do you usually park? your account of the "hawks nest" was mine to a t, i kept thinking about all of the car comercials that were supposedly filmed there, must have been special effects. if you remember rt6 before they updated it, like a longer faster 218, it was really hairy. by the time i started riding it they had "improved" it. still the best around, a run without a cage in front of you can be mind altering on the right bike. rt6 is the reason i lusted after a buell, my dyna is a nice bike for touring but can become a handfull if you push it, the xr rocks on this road but i still wanted more, the xb is just about perfect here, in it's environment i guess you could say.

Mike, show is from 6 - 9 PM. $2 admission. You'll see the HUGE row of bikes off to one side of the field, all bikes park there.

When did this "improved" version of 6 take place? I grew up in the Leptondale area of Wallkill NY, just a mile from the Newburgh town line. I remember back in 1985 when I was in highschool I drove a few friends to Peekskill 3 or 4 times for some house partys.

I seem to recall rt 6 being a bit different then, more twisty near peekskill and I thought it hugged the cliff closer and longer. I moved out of the area for most of the nineties, but upon returning to orange county in "99" that road wasn't quite how I remembered it. I just figured that the beer & weed had altered my perception of it, but now you've got me wondering? Did it change while I was gone?

it changed quite a bit. it was the same road construction style as 218, tighter turns, no guard rails just rocks, and right on the edge of the mountain. not sure what year it changed but they just about doubled the with. it used to be refered to as the "goat path" years ago. for years there was a trooper barracks at the bottom of it, received a few warnings and lectures but they were pretty open to a little fun on the mountain as long as it was off hours. if i remember correctly they even kept track of "lap times" who could get over the mountain the fastest among the younger troopers. that road is a great place to learn on, some of the turns are actually banked like a track, and the speeds arent too high. great place

I've heard it referred to as "the goat trail" and "the snake trail"

I also dont recall the traffic circle down by the Mobil gas station being there when I was younger. I think it was windy & twisty all the way to where the Bear Mtn Parkway merges into it. Then I recall it hugging the hudson tighter as you entered the city of Peekskill & joined route 202.

Still, it's an awesome road. The toughest thing about it is trying to time it so that you don't get behind any cars. I cant tell you how many times I've been carving it up and halfway into a hairpin blind curve I've come up on a 15 MPH car with it's brake lights on as the driver is sh**ting himself to try to make the turn.

I live pretty close to Rt 6, it's always a nice ride. Another great ride in the area is route 301 in Putnam County from Cold Spring to Carmel. It's about 19 miles with some nice higher speed twisties and nice scenery.

BTW I didn't know that it was Super Sunday so the wife and I ended up at the dairy. On our way home some guy on a Sporty asks me at a light if I know the way to super sunday, that's when I knew I was woefully misinformed. I saw an X1, Blue XB9R, and a 97 S3T. I was on my Red XB12R.

Hammer, I was at the end of the lot furthest away from the diner. So if you came in that entrance and turned to the left, my XB was sitting there on the right. It has a eyelash on the one light. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/TheRealJohnnyLunchBox/DSC03232.jpg

I didn't stay very long because the diner was packed and it was getting hot. See you around.
