Hey all.

I recently lost one of the nice stainless T-27 screws that holds my chin fairing on. I also gave the bike a once over and noticed the heads on some of the black oxide coated screws are corroding. I went to my local HD dealer and looked up the parts. There are just two types used on the bike. The stainless ones are $2.55 each and the oxide coated screws are $2.37 each.

Ouch!

The only difference between the two are a 3/16 or so shoulder on the stainless screws. So I started looking around for someplace I can get stainless 1/4"-20 x 3/4" truss head machine screws with an 1/8" shoulder under the head. Just one screw to replace both types. McMaster Carr has like the exact screw with a security pin in the middle and no shoulder for about $0.14 each. I e-mailed them to see if they could source the exact one for me, although I'm sure I would need to order a thousand or so. That would be the type of thing I might look to order from a parts shop - a kit of 20 for $10, something like that, in case Al or somebody might want to jump in with me!

Does anybody have any other vendors they deal with who might have something like this sitting on their shelf?

I've converted a bunch of the bolts on my XB to allen headed stainless ones which were purchased at Lowe's.

I order from this place some.

Nothing real special, but service and shipping time is great.

On a serious note, since you're talking screws...

What are these for?

While we're on the subject, the cheap rivets on my timing cover are ready to fall out. Has anyone here drilled theirs out and replaced with new hardware? If so, what do I need? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

milehigh,
I drilled mine out and replaced them with new rivets. its very easy. does anyone know if the timing ever has to be adjusted on these bikes? does the tech have to drill the rivets out and replace them each time something is done with the timing? im sure it doesn't need too much, if ever. just wondering.

I brazed nuts to the inside of the interior metal plate, which allowed me to use standard allen bolts.
