A newbie here and loving it! Just bought the race kit online on ebay and will install in the garage.(Just trying to save a few bucs, rather the dealer charge me) Question is can I ride it up to the dealer just to recalibrate the TPS or will this do any kind of damage? It is about a 7 mile ride, 90% highway. If I can, what precautions should I take not to ruin anything.(Ex. don't rev past 4000) Thank you for the help.

There is a better way than the one you suggest.
What you do is :
1.Make appointment with Harley dealer for TPS reset.
2. Install Air Filter
3. Install Muffler
( I always make a copy of the relevant section of the Shop Manual to bring with me to give to the tech, just in case he doesn't have one. Shop Manual is a must for new owners as the Buell has so many original solutions. Available from one of our Sponsors,Daves, at Appleton Harley Davidson Buell.)
4. Ride bike to dealers, with ECM NOT, repeat NOT, installed.
5. Install ECM in Dealers parking lot, takes about 5 minutes, have dealer reset TPS. Should charge no more than $35.
The reason to do this is that each individual ECM runs differently before the TPS info is put in. My bike would not run at all, some run well, some not so well. Best thing is not to try it. You can run the bike with out the ECM installed, but it probably will run a bit lean, so best thing is wait on install until you have appointment. Depending on the dealer, this can be quite some time. Make sure the dealer is "Buell Friendly" . Lots are. Most aren't:-)

To ease the install
remove the 2 bolts that hold the ecm in place. They are a bear to get to when the battery is in place.

Then you can just pop the seat, remove the stock, install the race, reconnect the seat

After you get home, put the 2 bolts back in.

Some dealers (depending if you bought the bike there) will reset the TPS for free. Mine did

Why remove the complete standard ECM to TPS-reset the Race ECM? Just drive to the dealer with your standard ECM. Inside the dealer: unplug the grey and black connector from the standard ECM and plug them into the Race ECM. Do the TPS reset. Unplug the grey and black connector and plug them back on the standard ECM. Drive home and change the ECM at home. The ECM keeps its settings in memory, so no problem.

Blackbjoel

Why would you want to put the stock ECM back on after you had the tps reset for the race kit??

At that point, leave the race ecm installed Drive and be happy

I think what Blackbjoel was saying you could snap the race ecm just for them to perform the TPS reset (with the stock one still installed) then when he got home he could switch it out.
