I have a 04 XB 12 R in need of a clutch adjustment. When I shift into 2nd and 3rd under power the clutch slips,any tips or special instructions on adjusting the clutch?

I'll be the first one to say it. Buy a service manual. Not trying to be mean, but if one of us forgets something then you might be in trouble. You can also try a search, someone might have posted the steps.

I can't say that I've seen a clutch adjustment go out to where it slips...drag maybe. I sounds like a clutch replacement. A new manual, clutch kit, clutch tool...250 dollars minumum

I would check for binding of the cable not letting the clutch engage fully.
EnergyOne mfg has a clutch kit for $75, it works very well. I use the Extra Plate kit which is also the same kit for the older Buells and Sportsters, you just don't need all the plates in the XB. Buy the manual, its real easy for one of us to goof up the instructions. You can also change out the clutch without the clutch tool, you just need to use 3 large C-clamps to compress the diaphram evenly. The advantage of the clutch tool is you don't have to take the clutch basket off.

For adjustment I would say you should definitely loosen the cable __A LOT__ before turning the adjustment bolt (slotted one). Not doing this will give a false sense of tightness and incorrect adjustment.

I went through this about a month ago when I did the full service myself for the first time (dealer is going away supposedly) and didn't loosen the cable enough...bike shifted "ok" but not quite perfect. Went through the process again with the cable much looser and it shifts much better and has stayed that way for a while now.
