I agree as far as shaft versus anything else the shaft drive will win out in smoothness and lower maintenance costs. I actually heard of one guy designing a brace to help get rid of the flexing under hard acceleration. |

We had a number of V-maxes come in the shop with stretched rods. They actualy had piston hits on the heads. Is that what happened to yours? Might need to take up model rail roading as BadS1 has me afraid to go down the V-Max path....Chain drive conversion would be cool....but I can see the $$$$ and time flying out the window. How long did it take you to do the conversion? Wife #2 is a great, but I don't think I could convince her that I would keep it stock. She knows me too well. Wife #1 really needed the boot but this one is a keeper. Although a built V-Max could be a real cool father son science project....... Yeah...that's the ticket! |

You ain't kidding.What I see on the Max's these days are way beyond my bike was but it was awesome back then cause so few were set up like mine in 1988.Man I'd like to talk more about these bikes but I gotta catch some zzzz's |

Hey Trains can cost as much or more than engine mods! Plus you can't ride the train. Unless of course you build a nice gauge 1 live steam outdoor railroad then you could probably ride some kids around on it. |

I like your black swingarm, paint or powder? Bike looks great! and that is one sweet looking XBR. V-max, sme-mack! Those bikes got so much crap on'em I'd be scared to ride the dern things on the street. Now give me a nice long straight away back in TX towards El Paso, be fun to see what they would do top end wise. |

U4euh: That's exactly what I don't what my bike to be. I rode my bike home from the show...in the rain Everyone else was scrambling to gets their's in their trailers. I like show bikes, but if you can't ride 'em, forget it. I've spent too much time on my bike to not ride it cause I'm worried about it getting messed up. The V-Max's were awesome. As soon as I brought my bike in and found out they were in my class, I knew I didn't have a chance. The first one above with the flames was out of control. The third one won best streetfighter. It was really sweet also. Like I said, I'm not upset about it. It was still a lot of fun. I knew this would make for good conversation and I wanted some other opinions on it. Maybe it was me that was in the wrong class. In my opinion, the lightning is streetfighter defined. To me, it just goes back to how it handles. I think the streetfighter class is a strictly sport bike class. No matter what anyone says, I will never consider a V-Max a sport bike, and that's mainly why I don't think they should have been in my class. My swing arm is black powder coat. What a pain in the . It took no time to powder coat, but it took almost four days to strip it. There is so much material on the swing arm. I wouldn't have powder coated it if it wasn't for Xbcrazy and this thread http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/120529.html Craigster: "Why do you care what a V-Rod is? Then, under Features & Benefits it says "The original 1298cc V-4 power cruiser has a unique style, stance and look that’s all its own as well as an international fan base." That's exactly why I was talking about the V-Rod's. I think they should be in the same class as the V-Max's. And since the V-Rod would never be in the streetfighter class, or even the Street-Rod for that matter, that's why I was comparing them. Thanks for all the compliments |

Daveinm, your bike looks really nice, I like the tasteful applications powder coating and chrome. I used to participate in ISCA car shows here in Houston and felt the same frustrations that you do. These shows are geared for trailer queens that are never run on the street. I remember competing against guys who had airbrushed and chromed out their under-carriage. Nuts... There is quite a bit of stratedgy going on in chosing a class to compete. For example if all of those V-Max's entered in the cruiser class, they would have had to compete against the HD's and choppers. So they chose street fighter. One of the reasons I got out of the car hobby was that all you do is spend money under the hood and show it off at the next cruise in or car show. Bikes are all about riding! |

Mike_bolts: Yeah, I understand their strategy. However, the show producers/judges should not have let the V-Max's in a sportbike category. I'm not worried about spending the money. I've done all the work myself and I thoroughly enjoy doing it, so it's much less expensive then what most people would have to spend and it's well worth the cost in my opinion. I work on computers all day and being in the garage is a great escape. Being in the garage draws me to the bikes almost as much as riding them. I even find myself constantly working on friends and relatives bikes To me, the shows are just something different to do. It's like a weekend vacation. I'd be doing the same work to the bike if I wasn't showing it, so what do I have to lose? Entry fee was only $30, and tickets were $12, so it almost pays for itself if you plan on going to the show both days. I find it extremely rewarding that my bike is at a show like that, doesn't look even slightly out of place next to all the insane custom bikes, and best of all, I did all the work myself. Plus, it gives me motivation to do all the mods to the bike instead of procrastinating like usual, and it's a good excuse to give her a good cleaning |

Power cruiser class is more like a large capacity V-twin that resembles a V-star and those types of bikes. The V-max is still more of a standard bike that has an awesome V-4 motor. Basically show me a power cruiser that in stock form can run a mid to high 10's with a good rider. The only other bikes during that time that could where the GS1150ES, V65 magna and other bikes in the muscle bike class. The only bikes that get those good of times these days stock are sport bikes in general. The power cruisers of today cannot run those times. |

They look like really powerful cruisers to me.They stand alone.Nothing like them.Never has been.Doing a rolling burnout in 2nd gear without using the clutch is something that is so awesome.There is no cruiser on the market that can do that.Or wheelie for that matter. |

That is why these bikes shows should just have a V-Max class as there are usually plenty in a major metro area to fill their own class. |

hey dave, i was wondering why nobody takes the time or thought to powder coat there forks to match there bikes. Is it a pain to do or just something people wouldnt dare do. To be completely honest with you i dont even know if its a good idea but i do know that your bike would look sweet with some all black forks. |

You have to slide the forks through the clamps and build up of powder coat would make that difficult plus probably scuff the finish. |

I agree with Krassh. I don't know how you would get the stanchions through the triple trees without ruining the finish. Plus, they would probably get ruined when you bake them. I don't know about anodizing. I'll have to talk to Al about that. I am planning on powder coating my triple trees black. Just haven't gotten to it yet. |

Hard anodizing the forks looks great, but it is a pain in the butt to do. They already are hard anodized, inside and out, but it is "clear" anodize. To black anodize them, you must first strip the existing hard anodize on the outside, polish the forks, then re-hard anodize the exterior in the desired color. The plater will need to prevent the anodizing from getting inside the tubes when the redo the external anodize. You pretty much have to grind thru the existing hard anodize, it is, well, very hard It has to be done with great care, since as soon as you get thru the hard anodize, you're into soft aluminum and the metal removal rate changes DRASTICALLY. You can butcher a perfectly good set of forks if not done very carefully. But they look fabulous when done. I'm going to be doing a set of S2 forks for my S1W soon, and have been thinking about doing the XB-S forks as well. Not sure where I'll find the time, it takes more than a couple hours per tube. Al |

That was a rear-view camera monitor. He had an Ermax undertail and mounted a camera in one of the tail lights. Really cool! |
