Still dealing with some horn trouble on my 9R (I know about the wire routing on the S - that's not it.) Would somebody be so kind as to measure the resistance between the two terminals on their horn for me? I'm getting right about one ohm, and a max current draw of 3.5A. Thanks! If anyone's been following my diatribe on the subject, I've had an annoying problem for a while now. Sometimes when I honk the horn, the engine sputters. If I honk while it's idling, it dies. I disconnected the power wire to the horn, I can hit the button all day. I disconnected the ground wire only from the horn, and I can hit the button all day. If I measure the current from the battery, there is no current draw when I hit the switch. Resistance is infinite from the windings to the frame. Power side and horn appear OK. With an ohmmeter, there is less than one ohm resistance from the ground connector to the negative side of the battery. If I disconnect the ground wire and run a new (temporary) ground wire from the horn to the battery, I can honk 'till I'm blue in the face without trouble. Either I have a ground wire that has higher impedance than it should, or the current draw from the horn is excessive and overwhelming the capacity of the ground line. Any thoughts? | ||

Have you tried removing the horn from its mounting bracket? Have you tried swapping the polarity of the horn wires? | ||

Looks like I found the trouble. This is connector 24A/B for the left hand controls.  Tucked up and out of the way, you can see the tubing surrounding the wiring going up to the left hand controls traps water. It was full. Probably from my trip up to Laconia last weekend in the rain.  It looks like every time I put the bike into a left turn it would drip out into the connector. I had 5 meg or so between pins 1,2,4 and 5. Hit it up with some contact cleaner and no more problem. I think here's the fix for now:  Water drains much better that way. I still have no idea how it was killing the engine, though. | ||

Do a continuity test on the individual connections for the horn. I think you might find a short in the ground side of the wireing, so that when power is applied(you didn't mention running a hot line with a switch to the horn with only the ground connected, while the bike was running) its shorting things out. |
