I was on my way to the local drag strip (Bristols Thunder Valley in TN) when i decided to stop at the gas station to pick up some snacks so i wouldn't have to pay $2 a candy bar at the strip. well after choosing my candy i went to pay and the women behind the counter says. "you know its illegal to wear that in a place that serves alcohol" i said no and thanked her for the warning and left. this is the first time i have heard this and find it odd. I could understand if i was buying beer they couldn't see my face. I don't understand why its places with alcohol only because i could robbing somewhere without alcohol just as easy. Anyone heard this in your state? (by the way i wasn't going to race just to watch, theres an all motor harley with no wheelie bars or anything running 9.2 everything else runs 10-12 1/4s so i'll just sit on the sideline |

Why did you wear your helmet in the store? I bet she thought you were going to rob the place! (Message edited by tomzweifel on June 23, 2005) |

Out of common courtesy I don't wear my helmet inside. I could imagine the thoughts that run through the poor kid behind the counter's mind if I were to stroll through the door with a flat black TZR with a dark smoke visor. Sure underwear's cheap, but these kids don't make much. |

Same thing goes for masks - only legal during Halloween. |

i've worn my lid into a convenience store to use a rest room or pick up something quick. not with the dark visor down though kinda off subject but dark helmet/visor reminded me... one thing i find pretty funny is how much dogs hate my black helmet/visor combo, not sure if you run into that Kdan. if one is in a car in front of me they go nutty. i dont even have to do a thing but ride and stare (cant see my eyes). couple of weeks ago was the largest to go ape-sh*t, big rotti with the back seat all to himself. shook the car he was so rabid in there barking at me. i had to back off cause the drivers were starting to focus on the barking dog rather than drive. |

Similar story: was buying liquor in Salt Lake City, and since I always write "Ask For I.D." on my credit cards, I handed the counter lady my Driver's License too. Stupid conversation as follows: She: "You have to sign your card." Me: "Um, No." She: "I can't accept this without a signature." Me: "I'm not signing my card. Look at my License like it says." She: (flustered) "Well, it's the law..." Me: "Still not signing. Use my state-issued I.D., the signature is there." She: (exasperated) "Well, I already started the transaction (yadda yadda yadda)" To this day, I wonder: 1. Is that really a law or was she just dumb, 2. If I had signed my name on the card, then on the receipt, both right in front of her, would she have still compared the two? haha I don't wear my helmet in the store, 'cuz I use it to put groceries in. People eyeball me like I'm shoplifting, but nobody ever says anything 'cuz I'm big and bald and usually still wearing gauntlets. Doesn't matter anyway- you have to actually leave the store to shoplift. Ramble ends... |

i was just using the flat black and mirror visor shopping basket yesterday and boy did i get some looks. i dumped the contents on the belt when i got to the check-out and got a chuckle from the clerk. who cares what the people in the store think. i doubt anyone from management will ever stop you for putting things in your helmet (providing you make a stop to pay for it). i do know that it's illegal to wear a helmet into a bank in england. i haven't heard anything other than blastrider's story from TN over here. maybe there's some info on the AMA site? |

I've walked into a gas station with an officer inside (North Carolina), walked in the door, straight to the register with my wallet out, paid and left. Officer didn't say a thing. Sure there are a ton of circumstances there, but if it were illegal here I am sure he would have said something. |

It’s illegal to wear a helmet into a place that serves alcohol because in the past kids have used other peoples ID’s to buy beer then hidden their faces behind motorcycle helmets (or ski masks) in a vain attempt to trick the sales clerk. This frustrated store employees who were hesitant to ask customers to remove their helmets (or masks) due to the indignant verbal assault they sometimes got from outraged patrons who saw no need to comply with their demands. SOLUTION = pass a law outlawing the wearing of helmets or masks while in a place of business that distributes alcohol. This in turn gave the store clerks some leverage when dealing with unruly helmet wearers. “But seriously, to razz you about it when you where only buying snacks is a little anal.” |

Unless said store clerk was robbed by someone wearing a helmet. Being held at gunpoint by someone wearing a helmet and dark visor is not a fun thing to experience, especially when its a 12gauge barrel inches from your face. In some states it is illegal to wear your helmet into any place of business that handles monetary transactions. |

It is illegal in Georgia to wear a helmet while driving a car because the law feels it impairs vision. Th vast majority of trasporation related head injuries occurr in cars. This is the reason Australia has considered such law. |

I took a seminar about credit cards while working for a motorcycle dealer and they covered this situation. I know it seems dumb, but the truth is that without your signature the card is invalid. It even states this on the back of the card. The signature isn't just a means to verify the card holder. Basically, without your signature you haven't "agreed" to comply with the terms of the card. If a store accepts a credit card that is not signed and the card holder decides to refute the charges then the store is not likely to get paid for transaction because they accepted an invalid card. At the seminar we were actually instructed not to accept cards without signatures and to ask the patron to sign the card. It's on par with accepting an unsigned check. Mike |

Maybe off subject but: Local grocery store = no backpacks, but helmet ok. local Walmart = don't care. My backpack goes with me everywhere when on 2 wheels. |

Spike, the acceptable exception to that statement is when it is written in the signiture space "SEE ID". Provided you have a notorized photocopy of the front and back of the card on file it makes it easier to recover charges made off a stolen card. |

The credit card that I use has my picture on it. Twice now, someone was embarrassed when they asked for a photo id so the signature could be compared. lol "Doesn't THAT look like me? |

My family owns commercial property and a number of businesses. Not all of our businesses sell alcohol, but you would not be allowed in any of them without taking your helmet off first. If you didn't comply, you would be asked to leave. If you didn't leave, you'd be arrested. I can't think of any business that would allow a transaction with a masked customer except if forced at gunpoint. Why is this even a thread? |

I think helmet laws are dumb, I also think its dumber to NOT wear a helmet. I will always ride with a lid on because I do dumb things on my bike and the roads are filled with dumb people! |

I have a full face HJC helmet with a flip up front. If I'm just stopping for gas, I don't take my helmet off, it's a pain in the butt. But when I walk into the store to grab a bottle of water and pay the bill, I alway's flip it up so they can see my face. No one has ever told me to take it off. |

I have always found it puzzling that stores state, "No Shirt No Shoes No Service" but nothing on pants. I will have to test out my theory at the 7-11 here. Gotta tune my G-String to A#, baby! |

What about the muslim women? I saw on the news that a muslim woman got to take her Driver's Lic. picture with the towel ON! I've actually had non-American's in an AMERICAN store refuse to take my DoD Militray ID card. Talk about me letting somebody have it. "What are you stupid or not properly trained? Let me talk to your Supervisor!" |

I think if that happened to me I would looose my mind... a Federal ID is work less than a state ID?. On the other normally don't use my DoD ID. Shawn |

Try walking up to a bank with your helmet on. They will usually meet you at the door. I have done this a couple of times. Now I get close enough to get security to start coming then take it off. |
