So I bought the Vehicle Diagnostic Scan Tool Software (VDSTS) with the impression that I could use it to recalibrate my Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) for the 1K mile service. I hooked it all up and played with it for a while to get used to working with it, but I couldn't find out how to use it to calibrate anything. So I reread the pdf manual that came on the CD, which is useless by the way, and can't seem to find anything about it. Check the website out for more information (like the manual says to do) and still can't find anything on it. I read the bikes service manual and it runs you through how to do it, but they explain it as if you have the "real" Buell scan tool.

Now I'm getting frustrated because when I open the throttle (WOT) the VDSTS displays the percentage of throttle opening via the TPS voltage, and mine only shows that it opens to 80%. So when I open the throttle all the way, the ECM thinks I'm only asking for 80%? If thats the case, then I'm missing out on 20% of my available power!

Does anyone with the VDSTS know if it'll recalibrate my TPS, or do I need to bring it to the stealership?! If it needs to go to the stealership to be recalibrated why was I told I wouldn't be a slave to the dealer if I bought it?! I know it'll come in handy, but the reason I bought it was to do my own services!

Am I missing something in the software package, or am I just crazy?

You CAN reset your TPS. You need to go into active test mode. If I recall, it looks a little like a screwdriver icon. Once you've shut your throttle completely (i.e., back the screw off so that it is no longer touching the stop plate, snap the throttle a couple times), you click on the TPS reset button, it comes back after a few seconds and says "Pass".

I highly recommend that first, you hold the throttle to about 1/3 open, then execute the TPS reset routine. Go back to diagnostic mode, and monitor the throttle position (percentage, voltage, whatever). Then open the throttle slowly. The value should NOT change until you cross the threshold of the position you held it at when you reset it. This will confirm to you that the reset is truly working. Then, go BACK into active test mode, and with the throttle plate truly zeroed, reset the TPS. Turn the idle adjust screw up to about 5%, then start the bike, should be close to a good idle at that point. But fine tune it to run at 1050.

IF it is NOT staying the same until you cross that throttle position threshold, the TPS is NOT resetting and something else is wrong.

The manual does kinda suck, but there is enough there to figure it out. The SW isn't very complicated, play with it for a while, you'll figure it out (if the communications are working)

Thanks Nwxb9s and Al.

I'll try that tonight when I get home.

I'm a little concerned that when I open the throttle all the way, it only shows 80%. Should I be worried? Is that normal for an XB12S?

normal. You aren't leaving any power on the table.

I reset my TPS using the Techno Research tool on June 8th, I started by making sure my throttle cables were adjusted as per the XB manual. Next was to make sure that the butterfly was fully closed and seated with the idle adjuster back off fully. I had no trouble codes so I didnt need to clear anything. My Throttle position read 0. I did the TPS reset, warmed her up to the temp in the manual and set the idle to 1050.

I did notice that I have a small percentage of throttle open when I was finished @ 4% but I did have 99% when WFO.

I had a local dealer, after assistance from LoneXB, reset the TPS when I installed the Race ECM. For some reason it didnt hold and the bike ran like A$$ when I got back from Pocono.

I guess I have the lastest version of the software and dongle, I put it in a tower style computer I had laying around. I had no problems figuring it out (I am MAN no instructions Necessary!!!)and the bike is running the strongest it has to date. Now that I have the program you can also view what the sensors are reading, Im working on IAT relocation. Anyone try that yet???

What's the difference between the VDSTS Standard and Professional? Is the professional version more powerful, or should I just stick with the standard that I already have?

It would seem that my problem is that I tried to read the instructions.

I bought my 03 XB9S from a man that did his own 1000 mile service. Bike had 1900 miles on it. Bike pulls strong from low rpm all the way through the gears and up to 100mph (it is still pulling strong---i just dont want to push it) It has no coughs, stumbles, sags etc up through the gears-----roll ons in high gear from 50mph are not real crisp(will not instantly want to throw you off rear of bike) but comes on smoothly and powerfully all the way up with no stumbles or sags.----bike is all stock. Am waiting for a 12S air box cover. My question is ---do i need to take it for a TPS adjustment?? thanks Doug

vdsts pro offers more vehicle capabilities than standard version. ie buells and all harleys with efi. of course there are more versions of the pro and more bikes.

For some reason the VDSTS was cooperating with me last night and worked perfectly.
