Saturday, I brought my XB9SX in for its 1,000 service (only a few 100 miles over). Cost was $170, including synth oil in the primary.
Sunday, I went to visit the traveling Buell factory demo truck to just to see what a 12 felt like.
After I returned from the demo ride, I noticed a little puddle under my bike. Upon inspection, I saw that the primary drain plug was almost all the way unscrewed. Apparently, after placed in there finger-tight, it was never wrenched into place. I think I only lost a few tablespoons of oil, and the Buell guys who were there with the demo trailer had a wrench that we used to snug it up. These guys were entertained....they were from the 2 other Buell dealers in the area.
I'm looking for suggestions on how to raise this potentially costly problem with the dealer. I am willing to give them one more chance, as the sales side of the place is very good to deal with (they gave me my cling bag when I picked up the bike). I do think I need to tell them about this, if for no other reason to remind the tech to check everything twice.

As an amusing aside, it did give my BMW riding buddy a chance to remind me that for a new bike-warming present, he had given me a bag of oil-dry....

why didnt you go get the service manager and point it out at the time? if you go back for service and bring it up later, thats probably the first thing he'll say.

It is an honest mistake that should never happen. Definately let the dealer know, so they can address process issues, but don't turn it into a holy war or take it as a personal insult.

At least you know they actually changed the tranny fluid : )

I called, and politely told them to give the tech a reminder to check these things twice next time...they apologized, which was enough for me. I give one free pass where there was (I believe) no harm.

first thing you must do: obtain a 5/8 box end wrench, several 1/16 drill bits, a length of safety wire, and 4 quarts of whatever synthetic lubricant you wish. remove both drain plugs, drill through the heads, replace drain plugs, secure with safety wire, refill swingarm and primary with your chosen lubricant(s) dont let anyone else work on critical motorcycle systems/fasteners unless you KNOW them and TRUST THEM WITH YOUR LIFE.

I would have them check the level of fluid, you don't know how much escaped.

My Old VFR 500 was safety wired...that is a good idea for this thing, will do it soon.
I dont know why it never seemed necessary for my Beemer...I guess I dont think that bike would dare pull such a stunt with me.

PS. I was at my BMW bike dealer Sunday (yes, they are open) and told him about the "no warranty without genuine BMW motorclothes" thread on he BadWeb last week....cracked him up.

I think your very lucky!

If that plug fell out out while you were riding and dumped a quart of gear oil on your back tire and on the road infront of your riding buddies it could have been a disaster.

Wow that's amazing. Only $170 bucks for the 1000 mile service? Everything is so damm expensive here in California. My dealer quoted me $360 at first but it ended up being $300 in the end.

$300 does seem high, they really did not do all that much (yes, including tightening the drain plug).
