critical? xb12r with race can...the bracket is the aluminum band that fits around the front of the muffler. the can is solid, no shake. may take a week or so for replacement, anyone else break the hanger? thanks dan |

Sounds like the clamp failed, not the bracket. Correct me if I am mistaken. Yes, you need full integrity of all your muffler support points. This is VERY important for the continued health of your exhaust tract. |

That and you don't want to pole-vault off of your exhaust... Ask Wyckedflesh about that. He still has pins in his arm. If it were mine... I MIGHT take one off the back and replace the front (If it's not too long). I am not really suggesting that you do that though, but I might in pinch. |

Wow, must have been the weekend for it. I get 100 miles away from home and noticed the band snapped on mine. I carefully rode it home thinking about Wycked's superman stunt...and how I really hope I don't learn how to do it myself. BTW - the front mount is different than the rear. |

Mine broke too. The torque spec. in the shop manual for that band clamp is wrong. It's way too high in my opinion. |

The generic 3/4" wide by 0.025" thick T-bolt clamp torque spec is 80 LB*IN. What does the service manual say and what size are the clamps? See the McMaster-Carr catalogue page 216 for more info (3rd and 4th entries from top of page). Go to www.mcmaster.com and type "T-bolt clamp" in the search field hit "enter" and then click on the "T-Bolt Hose Clamps" link and you'll then have the same page and the other links and ordering will also work. There is one design of T-Bolt clamp that I have found to be vastly superior to the conventional design. It is the one found on the above linked catalogue page that is named "Hinged-Opening Bolt Hose Clamps." It is superior because its edges are rolled to a slightly larger diameter. This larger diameter then avoids tensile failure from initiating in the edge of the clamp followed by crack propagation and ensuing catastrophic clamp failure. Unfortunately McMaster-Carr doesn't offer the clamps in diameters sufficient for the Buell XB exhaust. (Message edited by blake on June 20, 2005) |

Wild... As I was going to Bike Night at the Vortex last week I pulled up to a stop light and heard something dragging. I got onto the highway and got far enough from the exit to pull over. My chin fairing had shook all but one bolt loose. So I removed it, and ditched it by the side of the road. Upon doing this I noticed that I too was missing my front muffler strap! Did'nt think too much of it until I was bombing down the interstate at about a buck and thoughts of Wyckedflesh flashed through my head. DOH! Luckily Buell666 had one at his place. Come to think of it...I should probably go get my fairing! |

I lost All 3 of my clamps in the 200 or so miles between San Bernardino, CA. and Yuma, AZ. I installed new clamps(donated by Charlieboy so I could get home) with the screws on the left-hand side of the can in full view. Now I can look at them any time and see if the screws are loose. I also give them a light kick to check tightness at every fuel stop. |

Blake _ I'll check the service manual tomorrow, but there is a stress riser where the clamp exits the engine mount so "generic" specs. do not fit the application. Mine broke right on that crease. |

It is recommended that once the bands have been torqued to spec, that they not be reused. How many that have broken were reused? |

The service manual says on page 2-3: 108 to 120 in-lbs for the front strap and 48 to 60 in-lbs for the rear two. My mechanic's feel was screaming no when I tightened it the first time to 110 in-lbs. I'm setting my front one at 60 in-lbs. from now on. I bought a spare too. Wycked - Guilty as charged! |

I am actually going to make my own bracket. I am going to use 1095 blue polished and tempered spring steel for my choice of metal. This stuff can handle the vicious vibrations of a Buell. The stuff I'm getting is 0.050" thick and 3/4" wide. I'll everyone know how this goes. |

Just know that if you get that front strap wrong somehow, it can shear an exhaust stud. Not the end of the world, I've fixed that on two different Buells now. But's an afternoon or two ruined. |
