I've been experiencing pinging at about ~3800 - 4000 RPM when rolling on hard since I picked up my XB, new. Dealer said it was 'normal' for these engines but it sounded awful to me ( ! ) so a digging I went through the Almighty BadWeb and realized this was not a new issue with XBs. Just wanted to say THANKS to 2k4xb12 (Steve-O) for the short 'n sweet writeup on how to check the timing yourself. Very easy. Sure enough, my timing was off. Ping is virtually gone now! I can roll right on through 4K and not hear that damn knockin' around down there. I need to fill her up with some (multi-pump) 93 octane tomorrow and see how it goes. Test ride tonight was much, much better. Definite improvement. Question though, the bike was pinging really bad on my last ride and it was a long ride. Can you still do damage if you use the 'ride through it' technique I've seen posted around here? The ping got to the point where I had to ride in the 'bad zone' longer than I wanted. I'm probably just paranoid but I feel like I could have wrecked something during the ~1300 miles I've put on the bike with that condition present. |

Pull the plugs and look for bits of metal burnt onto the electrode, if you don't see any signs of it, then you are probably safe. If you do see signs of bits of metal on the plugs, see if you can borrow (Autozone will loan tools with a deposit) a bore scope, which is like a fiber optic telescope that will let you look into the bore through the spark plug holes and look for damage that way. Then just put in fresh plugs |
