That is true.
I think in most cases the 1K should be done by a dealer.
I usually do my own oil changes but take the bikes in to the dealer for the 1K,10K,20K ones.

Harley service will never touch my bike again. They broke it off deep by resetting my TPS on my x1. they charged me 270 to reset my TPS!!! I bought my own scan tool (thanks daves). Now I do it my self. Fortunately, I have 20 years mechanical experience to guide my through my learning curve. I reset tps on xb in 10 minutes. bike runs great. Dealer no more!!!

If I remember right my 1000 mile service was about $130 at Tilleys and they found a cracked rear rotor.Of course replaced under warranty. I bought a SM and now do all own service work.

Typeone pretty much said it all.
I always bring my bike to the dealer for it's first service. I consider it a good test of the dealer to see how good (or not so good) of service I can expect in the future. Plus, on the XB, first service includes a tps reset which I can not do myself.
Does anyone know if they check the timing on the first service? My timing light went amiss so that's one more thing I can't do myself.
I too can wrench on the minor stuff but it takes me a week to do what most here do in a day. (excluding oil changes, those go fast)

You can install the ECM in the parking lot and save 2 hours of labor.
My 1000 mile service cost 260 too.
FORK THAT! I've done every service / oil change since.

Ok, so I'll bring it in for it's first service, but I'll do the rest after that. How often should the fluids be changed? Should you do the tranny when I do the engine oil? How often?

The schedules are in your owners manual and in the Factory Manual

They are ridiculous though. Service intervals of 5000 miles? Does anyone really wait that long? The oil must be black as coal by 5000 miles!

I'd be worried about molecular breakdown (of the oil) and contaminants.
