It was fine for the clutch for 20k+ miles on my M2, and 3k+ miles on my XB. On the M2, it made a day and night difference. I did not notice a difference on the XB (better tranny until you have to remove it), and so am going to try normal 20w50 full synthetic. It's cheaper and handier. Actually, at the risk of co-opting your thread, I got Castrol Syntec 5w50 cheap (under $5 per quart), so I wanted to give that a try for both engine and tranny... anyone have any experience with it? Any problems? |

i have used many and various oils in the transmission of both sportster and buell. currently using a NAPA branded (valvoline) synthetic in 15w-50. works just fine in transmission and engine, cost is around 3.85 per quart. i have used the following lubricants in the XB transmission: HD sporttrans, amsoil 75w-90, valvoline 20w-50 synthetic, NAPA 15w-50 synthetic, royal triton QLT 15w-40 semi synthetic. none of them had any distinguishable qualities in operation, all worked just fine. |

Fullpower, There is quite a "weight" difference between the 15w-50 and 75w-90 oils that you have used. What is the actual weight of the HD Sport-Trans? Tim |

Tim, can't help you on the weight of the Sport-Trans oil...just wanted to add that I use Mobil 1 15W-50, the same as the engine. H-D/Buell recommends using their syn in both the engine and transmission. Speaking of the primary, something to watch out for, I got water in my primary after riding in the rain. I attributed that to the front fender throwing water on the boot for adjusting the clutch cable...water in boot seeps down clutch cable. If you look at the location of the boot, it is right behind the tip of the front fender. The reason I attribute it to the fender/boot, I was doing my 5K service, and when I pulled the boot up all kind of water ran out of it. Try to seal that boot some way, or your oil will be deluted. I am sure water is not good for the tranny, clutch, or any of the parts in the primary. If you ever change your primary, and the oil looks milky, there is water in your primary. Boy, was I puzzled when I first saw that! |

75w90 gear oil and 15w50 motor oil are almost the same weight. The scales are different for gear oil versus motor oil. |

been said before, and all have their own experiences, but the safe bet is to stay with something that the manufacture recommends. I am not just talking about the bike, but the oil manufacturer as well. I have used HD Syn 3 in the trans for almost 8500 miles. No problems, shifts fine. |

Harley Davidson explicitly recommends 20w-50 synthetic motor oil for ALL engine, transmission and primary chain cases on ALL Buell and Harley-Davidson vehicles. I have that in writing. |

Rating?/ okay ,HD Syn 3 is designed to be used in all HD Crankcase, Primary's and Transmissions. I use it in my Trany/Primary, and Mobil 1 V twin in my crank case. The Mobil I V twin is high in Moly, not good for wet clutches. My point is not ALL synthetics are okay for the gear box of the XB. (Message edited by deerhunter17 on June 07, 2005) |

Mobil 1 Gear Oil 75W90. If you notice water in the primary, put a small zip-tie on the rubber boot covering the clutch cable adjuster. |

Mobil 1 75-90 is the top. The gear oil has much greater resistence to shearing, which can be a real issue in the trans. The clutch is NOT a problem with the M1. On the subject of oil, HD ragged on synthetics for 20 yrs till it hurt their sales. NOW, they have the greatest syn, according to them. Hmmm, check out the HD/Amsoil issue on Google. |
