My 12S had been giving me some serious pinging when rolling on hard, which is gone now that my mechanic replaced the plugs at 10000 km's. As well, I switched over to Sunoco 94 Octane, which is making it even better.

Question: Can I use octane boost on my buell or is it bad? It seems to love the higher octane..

Question #2: Since I have been experiencing pinging for the last few thousand miles, is it possible that I weakened my motor (can I expect the motor life to be less than it would have been?)

Cheers!

Jack

The engine is probably OK. I think that a good deal of the octane boosters have lead in them. Not good for an O2 sensor. The manual doesn't recommend it either...

I never put anything less than 93 octane in. I also watch out for the gas pumps that have one nozzle for all octanes instead of separate nozzles for each octane just to make sure I get nothing but 93 in the tank.

I am still dealing with the pinging on mine. Pings at 3800 to 4200 rpm in 1st,2nd and 3rd. Two dealerships say it is normal but at Glendale Buells Demo Days,Erik said no way is that normal. I am wondering if a sensor is bad and how am I going to find a dealer to fix it...John

I'd try making sure the timing is correct as a first step. It can be checked fairly quickly.

After that, I'd get the TPS reset PROPERLY just to make sure the bike isn't deciding that the throttle is open less than it actually is. Search for the "How to reset a TPS in two minutes or less" thread in the KV. Print that out, and take it to your leader. I mean dealer. I think this would cause a lean condition...

After that... Denso Irridium plugs. /EDIT - IXU24's.

Thanks M1, I'll make another appt with 1st dealer, who sold me the bike. Glendale said they checked the timing but I doubt it. What is curious is that it only pings at that rpm, normally it should ping in an initial accel from lower rpm not on the gas to redline. I'm using 91 octane (only available in CA) and the bike is stock with 1,000 miles. I know when I put the "race kit" on it will disappear, either by not being able to hear it or the ECM will richen the mixture.I don't want to mask the problem....John

I hear you : ). Good choice too... Bandaids on motorcycles are generally a bad idea.

I'll have a TFI unit for sale for ~$200 here pretty soon. That should solve the pinging as far as I know. I'm selling it because I got a Power Commander III. I'm one of the few that actually DO need to remove some fuel... Go figure.

Pinging can damage the connecting rod bearings.

I also have a TFI unit for sale in the classified section...
Going to the Race ECM, looking more for a plug'n'play than a dyno setup device.

Cheers

hey M1,

Can I not get a "lead free" octane boost? Sunoco must use Methanol to boost octane...

Joojoo there are plenty of octane boosters that are "O2 sensor friendly" just read the package...well my O2 survived lots of OB's. Just make sure that your ignition timing IS set properly first of all, the XB's shouldn't ping but a few do, just check the archives. Replacing the plugs is hardly likely to cure pinging, but running higher octane fuel will.

Eurotwins, an XB12 will ping 3800 to 4200 if it's going to ping at all, have you fitted a race ecm? If not, get the ignition timing checked. Also if an XB or Sportster motor is going to ping it will do it in really HOT weather.
