Not really a problem being they still work but was wondering if anyone has had this happen on their bike. When I turn the key on after letting the bike sit for a few days the speedo and tach needle sometimes don't sweep at all or sometimes they just bounce. Turn key off and on again and they sweep fine. Usually it's only the tach that does this but every blue moon the speedo will do it. Should I be concerned and take it in it for warrenty work? |

well, that is not normal so if the bike is under warranty I would take it it and get it looked at while it is still free. a concern that I would have is that problems have to start somewhere and it would be ashame for it to go tits up after your warranty expires. I guess with it being summer I would check to make sure that the bike wouldn't be down for a long time. My thoughts on the matter at least, good luck. |

I notice mine doing the same thing sometimes. I wonder if going to the dealer would accomplish much. I'm sure I would hear "we couldn't duplicate it", or "they all do that", or "it's nothing to worry about". So far I have had no problems with how the gauges work, so I haven't worried about it much. Still, it couldn't hurt to ask someone in the service dept about it the next time I'm at the dealer. I have heard about a few problems these bike have had, but nothing yet about failing gauge clusters. |

The only guage problem I've had so far is my tach stopped working for about 15 miles on the way home Thursday then started it started working fine again. I'm thinking it's something simple like a pinched or loose wire. First service is next week so I'm gonna mention it to the tech while I'm there. Definitely have them take a look at yours while the warranty's still good. At the very least, it couldn't hurt. |

I'll have them look at it when I take it in for the TPS reset for my 10K. I'm doing all the work for my 10K and will need them for the TPS reset. so.... |

Mine is doing the same thing, the tach also quit working the other day for about 20 miles but came back on all of a sudden. Its been doing this for about 500 miles but I have noticed that if I "tap" on the instrument cluster it works so this may be an issue of just a bad connection. Ken |

The only guage problem I've had so far is my tach stopped working for about 15 miles im a tech.... and minde did the same thing happened 2 times think it has something to do with the starting sequence (SP???) if i turn the key on and start RIGHT away it happens if i start and see the tach not move , i shut off and turn on again ... all good if i dont and just start anyway it acts all wierd (Tach reading 800 rpm at 75mph) as soon as i restart it go's away mabey a quirk in the ecm ??? cuz no codes show on digital tech id say watch and see if tach and speedo reset if not switch on and try again if that doesnt do the trick than dealership Izzinya (Message edited by izzinya on June 05, 2005) |

Think I'll check all connections and when I take the forks off I'll take a look at the instrument panel to see if somethings loose on there. Only thing left to do would be to get the panel replaced under warrenty. |

Izzinya, you might be onto something there. I usually wait a few seconds after the needles to do their thing before starting. The one & only time I had the tach problem I was in a rush to leave & I started it the instant the needles touched back down to 0. I can't remember if the tach was reading correctly while she warmed up. I didn't really notice the tach's stillness till I was about 100 yards down the road. Then it started doing like you said, reading at 500-1000 rpm at 60-70 mph before it went back to normal. I didn't have to switch it off/on, it just corrected itself as I rode. Didn't ride yesturday but today it was flawless. (Message edited by metalstorm on June 05, 2005) (Message edited by metalstorm on June 05, 2005) |

Cataract2, good luck with your 10K service. I'm sure you already know this; Take your time & mark everything, & if you have a dig camera, take many pictures for reference. I swear if I don't mark things & take pics I get lost fast due to too many brain farts. (Message edited by metalstorm on June 05, 2005) |

Which is what the manual recommends... I also let mine warm up for a full minute (two in the winter) before I even pull in the clutch. |

I always give it a few seconds for the light to go out as well except for the one time mentioned above. As the bike is new, I let her get good & warm before I go. (never run a new bike cold, not good for break in. Today, the tach did the same thing again. I started it the right way and the tach read 0. I turned it off then on, waited for the needles to sweep & the light to go out & the tach still read at 0. I flicked the gauge then it popped up to 1000. It's just a stuck needle I think, no biggie. My Kawa zephyr used to do that every now & then for the first few thousand miles then never did it again. |

I checked out my xb's guages and I thought about it. I don't think that the sweeping of the guages has anything to do with the ecm. Somehow I think it's a simple glitch that happens from time to time, and possibly gets worse in time. I'm not ever certain that it can be fixes. I'd check the connections maybe add some dielectric grease to connectors and go with it until it breaks. wierd problem, let us know it you actually find "real" fix. |

I think the needle just sticks when it is cold. Mine did it with the factory 9sx ecm, 03 race ecm, and 05 race ecm. It always goes away after the bike starts. |

well I just had a problems on my xb 12r with the mph not working. the plugs to the ecm weren't seated well enough. I guess the ecm could have a factor in it. maybe just check to see if the plugs and harnesses are checked out. |
