I just purchased an '03 XB9SL with the Buell Race Kit (ECM and Pipe) I'm looking forward to riding this summer. I'm looking to buy two full faced helmets (wife and I) and was wondering if anyone could give any suggestions. I'm looking for modestly priced helmets. Thanks you |

My recommendation - HJC CL-MAX. Full faced but the chin bar flips up. Removeable liner, vents, etc. I like it, and it was only $119 at Parts411.com last year. |

They're not widely distributed much anymore, which might be a consideration for you, but I love my Nolan. I got it for $175. Congrats on the purchase! Now get your wife riding with you and see how much fun you have! |

Helmets are a lot like tires . I like KBC's. They seem to be every bit as good as Shoei or Arai but for half the price. I'll be picking up a VR-2 pretty soon. I've been using a VR-1 for four years and I love it. The VR-2 is lighter and has better ergo's and vents. It's also a bit quieter from what I hear... |

I have the Arai Corsair .. and I really LOVE the fit .. not too happy with the finish of the helmet .. but Arai is VERY good about covering their product |

I guess I'll go try on a bunch of helmets at a local cycle shop see what feels good. It's tough to judge what feels good in the shop and what feels good after a couple hours on the bike. I'll take a look at the ones that you all suggested. Thanks |

I have the Arai Astral-X, love it. One thing about the Arai helmets is that they have different shape helmets for different heads. The only company that I know of that does it. Also a full face will be more quiet than a modular one. Arai doesn't make modular helmets. They don't pass snell inspections. |

Pick up the June issue of Motorcyclist magazine, very interesting article on helmets in there--basically, their conclusion is that helmets that meet Snell standards are too hard and therefore deliver too much energy to the brain in a crash (I've also read a reply to that article by a Snell engineer, who refutes that...). Basically, the jury's out--but I don't think you have to pay Arai prices to get good protection! |

Full face helmets may have finally come to the happy place that motorcycles are currently in (IMO). It can be hard to find a BAD full face helmet (at a reputable dealer). Find one that fits comfortably, but snugly with at least a DOT cert. and you should be fine protection wise. I prefer my Arai, however you are paying for fit, finish, vents, quietness and lightness in most cases (or some combo thereof) with the pricey helmets. In no event should you buy a used helmet, or use one that "looks ok" after an impact. |

Congrats, and welcome to the family. Try www.scorpionusa.com EXO 400 about $130. DOT and SNELL approved. Light weight, quiet, good venting, anti-fog face shield,(no joke. won't even fog up in cold rain) and a large selection of colors and graphics. Mark |

Congrats on the new bike. When anyone asks me about helmets I always tell them "what is you head worth". Do not buy a cheap helmet, spend the money and get a good helmet, it is more of an investment anyway. |

M1combat : I just bought the KBC VR2 (flat black). It is 3.25 pounds, and is a skoosh quieter than my previous KBC. Visor ratchet shield is improved (won't fly open at odd moments.) Opening the vents make no discernable difference in airflow inside the helmet. Liner is very comfortable. Paid $151 shipped from mawonline.com. |

Chainsaw, thanks for the VR2 info and link! I was about to buy a VR2 Assassin helmet for $189, but mawonline.com had it for $167! Although it wasn't in stock, I can wait for that price. Should look good with my CityX. |
