Koz5150, American Family won't insure me (22 but spotless driving record, never been so much as a smudge on it) on any sportbike until I turn 25, and even then any kind of sportbike is on their "hit list" where they'll slap me with sometype of 400% surcharge. My SV650S is on their list, yet this kid who I went to high school with pays something like $350/yr with American Family for his SV650S. Meanwhile the cheapest I could find was $800/yr full coverage, and remember theres not been a damn thing ever on my driving record, not a claim, not any accidents of any kind. |

Enp83 I know what you mean - I'm 21 and I am lucky that my insurance company (USAA) has rolled over insurance onto my new bike from my old bike, because they no longer accept new clients with motorcycles. I get full coverage for about $400 a year. When I was looking around at other insurance places, the quotes I got were(prepare yourselves) NO LESS THAN $4000 PER YEAR. Yes, you read that right. There are three 0s after that 4. I about wet myself - those were from Progressive, McGraw-Hill, Geico (COSTS you up to 10% more on insurance, lol) and some wouldn't even insure me because I have a couple of speeding tickets from my car. I know it's really frustrating!!! I also think that since the trick riding on the public roads and freeways has become so popular that insurance rates are increasing - Everytime I see one of those guys doing a wheelie down the freeway with shorts, t-shirt and no helmet, I just cringe. |

I'm in the middle of buying a cityX in michigan and progressive wants about double for the XB9S over the XB9R. They didn't know what an XB9SX was. HD insurance found a company called "Dairyland" that was more reasonable. some of the other insurance companies put all the XB's in the High Performance 2 category - That's the highest possible rates. I saw numbers from $1000-$7000 a year. That's with a clean driving record, but no bike experience. I did just finish the MSF course. State farm looks like they could get me a lower rate if I moved my house and truck over to them but they won't commit until they got to see the bike, which I can't arrange until I get insurance so I can buy it. I got the best result calling HD insurance(800-832-4449), they ran through about 5 companies they work with in michigan. The web site just gives progressive's quote. |

Progressive like to advertise that they are a specialized motorcycle insurance company but everytime I have looked at getting a quote from them they were either the highest or tied for being the highest. Geico was next worst. I have Nationwide for everything and they are very reasonable. I used to have State Farm. They have a new policy in my area where they wont just insure a motorcycle. They only do it if you have other policies with them as a courtesy. One thing that is nice tho, they base the insurance completely on the size of the engine. So S or R, you will pay the same amount. The only issue I have with State farm is they can be a pita on claims. |

Thats actually surprising... Geico quoted me the lowest rate of anyone. Dairyland was actually higher for me. I'm 24 with a 12S, first bike, no indorsement yet, liability only, clean record, $350/yr. Thats like $20-$30 a month. Now, I'm in Texas and I'm only required to have liability. Those prices you see may be because of state requirements and may be for full coverage... just a guess. |

Well yes Because of theft and the fact that I ride with the philosophy that you will lay your bike down, it is a matter of when, not if, I go prepared in both safety clothing and insurance. I want to be covered no matter what happens. I have already had a bike stolen which really sucked. |

"I used to have State Farm. They have a new policy in my area where they wont just insure a motorcycle. They only do it if you have other policies with them as a courtesy." I too was told over and over again, but that is not a State Farm policy, that is an individual agent policy. I had to call atleast 10 different agents in my area before I found one that would write a "non-binding" (not binded together with any other policy, as I sure I had no other policies to bring them). I had them for two years summer '01 through summer '03 before switching. If you're getting ridiculous quotes from everyone, and can get a decent quote from state farm, don't let that bs line stop you. Get out the phone book and start calling every agent in your state until you find one that doesn't have their head up their |

I have insurance through State Farm as well. I have to keep my Bronco on the policy b/c they wont insure just my bike. Funny thing is I pay just as much in liability for my Bronco as I do for full coverage on my X1. Funny b/c my 1970 Bronco can barely get out of it's own way. The weird thing is that I get a multi-car deduction from State Farm because of it. |

i've insured 3 bikes in the last year, and every time, H-D insurance (Harley-Davidson insurance 800-832-4449) has beaten other quotes. 2 bikes are now insured through Dairyland, through H-D insurance at about 20% less than Geico, etc. |

I just received my State Farm policy update in the mail this week and my premiums have LOWERED nearly $100 per year for full-coverage (now less than $400). WTF? I thought insurance always went up no matter what you did? Rob |

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it but try harley davidson ins. 400 a year VS 2000 that most other companies wanted. Just a thought.... James |

Rek, mine were lowered $280 a year thru State Farm. But I also have 2 cars, and 4 bikes insured thru them. |

basing rates on displacement is the worst possible policy for Buell owners. yeah, it has 1200 cc's, but it not as high performance as the 600cc japaneese bikes. explaining that to the insurance companies is useless. |

Makes you wish the insurance companies would base their rates on horsepower, not cc's, eh? |

Steve, Maybe that's the case w/ mine. We have several other vehicles w/ them also (but the only bike is the Buell, since MT doesn't *require* MC insurance). Rob |
