Story #3... I was waiting in a long line of traffic at the draw bridge (which was up)... a motorcycle in front of me decides he doesn't want to be behind 15 or so cars, crosses the double yellow and goes straight to the front of the line... I pull up next to him, get his DL and instruct him to pull over after we get off the bridge (which he does)... The bike has 2 tags displayed from different states and the guy's DL is revoked from another state... duh!!! If you are going to do stupid stuff, at least have a valid DL and the proper tag!! LOL |

Paint shaker- I agree with you! It amazes me how many people out there drive like asses and then they get stopped and cry their hearts out. If you don't have your stuff up to snuff why draw attention to yourself by playing around. The old saying "don't do the crime if you can't serve the time" applies. I personally enjoy the speed of riding fast as well but do it not during high traffic hours where in all probability you might get hit or cause an accident. If your are going to play do it when it is deserted and open road ahead, not at a stoplight racing or passing up stopped traffic. You invite some knucklehead the opportunity to get road rage over your doings and when it comes to car versus bike in an accident=bike loses. When it comes to an angry motorist with a gun because you cut him off, you lose. Just remember you can out run the squad car a good portion of the time, however not motorola. If you do out run both good for you but chances are that officer that was chasing you will get your plate and put in a chase report with the secretary of state thus suspending the registration for the future. That's how it operates in Illinois at least. I'm sure that they have a procedure like that in every state. I give a lot of guys on bike's a brake since I own one and ride as well. But what you see out there with these stunt clubs and the guy's trying to imitate the tricks out on the streets in an uncontrolled environment is plain stupid. As a police officer when you see a guy laid out in the roadway screaming in pain with multiple fractures, bleeding internally or better yet no helmet and the firemen are scooping up his skull from the pavement you feel sick. 
Here in the states the motorists don't have the same perception of motorcylists like they have in Japan. After living in Tokyo and traveling throughout Japan on a Yamaha TZR250 two stroke race replica, I was amazed at how the Japanese treat the motorcylists. Your are not quite an equal with the automobile but pretty darn close. Wish it was the same here in the states with the respect. Unfortunately it is not.

A couple of years ago,a group of us,5,took a trip Illinois,all on Buells.One of us needed some front brake pads so we decide to run to Lincoln Nebraska to get them,as it was the closest dealer who had a set.The highway we were riding on had a 75 MPH speed limit.We were riding about 80 or so,a couple of the group decide to roll on and open them up for a few.So.........we all rolled them up,around 125 or so,we backed off,popped over a hill and there were about 4 HIghway Patrol that had 4 cars stopped.We were all going about 80 by then,we went by them,with no problem.A couple miles down the road a Highway Patrol car pulled up next to us and pointed us to pull over.It was a younger cop,he got out and started ranting were the @#$^%^% we thought we were going,so fast for.Then another patrol car pulled up behind us.We were all puzzled until he told us they had been following us for 10 miles or so.....by aircraft.The first guy took of his full face helmet,he was all grey headed,the cops attitudes changed light night and day.All of out group had grey except me and I was the youngest at 44.They smiled and kinda shook their heads,we told them we were going to Lincoln to get his brake pads.Then they started asking us questions about our Buells,they told us,about being followed by aircraft and we were getting tickets for 85 in a 75,we said ok.We told then a short history lesson about Buells,they asked how the bikes performed,then one of them asked us how fast they would go........I told him about 85 MPH., we ALL laughed,they told us to slow down, and we were on our way.I think the cops thought we were a group of young kids out racing around until we all took off our helmets.That did slow us down for most of that day,we were glad to pay the 46$ the ticket was,it could have been much,much worse. |

looks like the one "confiscated" a bong, and the other is making sure no one is looking!!...LOL...now I know why all the doughnuts, it's the munchies!!....LOL...just kidding, I'm on the waiting list for a few departments myself, having passed the first part of the POCS test.. |

Im looking forward to a traffic school thanks to my ride on April 3 - It was a great day so my wife and a cop buddy of our ( we got her into trackdays, hehe ) all went for a little ride to a spot in Thompanksville Ky. for a bit of pork shoulder, anyway, we were having an awesome ride untill a 4-runner pulled out in frnt. of us and then travled along @ 40 mph. After about 4 miles of this crap, we get to a clear passing lane and proceded to pass them with great fury. We all got by them and were doing about 75 in a 55 when we started slowing down, too bad the state trooper saw us. He pulled all of us over and was real cool, he hadnt seen a Buell , ever ! So we stood there and talked about my bike as he looked @ our liscences ( checking for M endorsments no doubt ), he then said , " Well, who wants the ticket ?" I told him I would take it becuase I was in frnt. After a few mintues he come back up to me and hands me a piece of paper - he then tells me that if I do this " safety school " the ticket wont count, then he hands me the ticket and tells us all to be safe. Funny thing, this same guy pulles my buddy and another guy over a few weeks earlier for speeding ! Guess I do get a break or trwo every now and again ! |

I have an odd question for the LEO's here...
If I wanted to carry a sword (the real deal, close to 5 feet long) on the bike, would this just be a "might have to explain it" situation, or cause a full scale panic? I am not even sure if it violates any law or not... |

I'm sorry, but that stuff makes me irate. If a young guy is speeding he's assumed to be a punk kid who's probably racing somebody and deserves to be lectured and ticketed, if a guy with grey hair is speeding it's no big deal. I heard a similar story from an older guy while out riding. He had been clocked at 101mph in a 55mph zone but was let off with a warning when the cop realized he was an older guy. It's like they discriminate against the guys who still have color in their hair. We're supposed to have just law enforcement and instead we get hair racists. |

On the other side of the law.... I was on my way to an Oceanside retreat, 2 1/2 hours into it and I hit a looong stretch of straight highway. 15 more miles to go and my speed got a bit ahead of me. There they sat, 3 MD state cruisers and one of them running towards his car. I looked down to see 73ish mph. I slowed down and noticed red&blue heading this way. So I slowed to a crawl on the shoulder for him to catch up as I slowly turned into a public parcking lot. He seemed amazed that I didn't run. In fact his buddies were apparently carrying on how he would never catch me. I was my normal courtious self and he asked me the strangest question.... "Can you follow me back to the radar trap so I can get my ticket book? I ran off so fast I forgot it" I said "yes" as he walked back to his cruiser. Then he stopped me from saddeling up, "since you didn't run and you were cooperative, I'll give you a verbal warning". To him I said "Thank you, goes to show we're not all hooligans". I've since watched my speed more and more in respect to the service that LEO provides. Thanks GUYS and GALS, warnings do work for us "nice guys"! |

Don't know about the sword question. But this weekend I had a baseball game about 40 miles away and it was so nice I couldn't pass up riding the lightning. So I stuffed all my gear (glove, cleats, uniform, batting helmet, etc.) into my new buell sling bag I picked up for doing a demo ride. The only problem was where to put the bat. So I wedged it between the oil cooler and ran it back along the left side of the bike to the passenger peg brackets. I tie wrapped it in and off I went. It looked like some crazy aftermarket upgrade to the naked eye for sure. It worked out fine and I had a great time on the ride. I'm sure it wasn't legal to do this but I didn't know how else to get there with the bat. I wish I took pitchers but I didn't...maybe next time. |

Downtown Denver on Park Avenue to I25n/I70. It is a MAJOR speed trap. Speed Limit of 35 but it leads up to the freeway and it is 3 lanes both directions so it SCREAMS to be 55mph. I meet my wifey's parents downtown to eat since I work there. I walk to my parking lot and gear up to ride home while wifey drives off with kids and her parents. I find myself behind these slow cars going 15 mph! I see a gap and POW 85mph to give them a growl of disaproval. I see a police car pulling someone over so I slow waaay down. I turn the corner to get on the freeway and I see a SUV that looks alot like my wifey's Trailblazer pulled over as well. Then I see her in the driver seat and I keep on going. When I got home my wife said she could see my grin poking out of my full face helmet! Her ticket was going 52 in a 35. God Bless those lil fellers in the LEO risking something or another. |

I had a deputy follow me to my drive way and when I pulled my helmet off he said 'Oh!, your an adult'. But plenty of grey haired guys in my club have gotten tickets so it is not a get out of jail free card. |

All of us that speed deserve a ticket each time we do,BUT......if you look at most of the bikes out speeding,racing,crashing,they ARE younger,punk if you will,kids.Thats the facts,I guess that may give you young guys something to look forward to,getting old,fat,grey headed,and maybe out of a ticket some time! |

Agreed. So what's up with the random freebies? If exceeding the speed limit warrants a ticket, then give a ticket to everyone who exceeds the speed limit. If the penalty for speeding is too harsh to deliver it on a consistent basis then soften the penalty, don't randomly dismiss it entirely. What if we treated other criminal matters in the same way? "Well you did commit 1st degree murder, but since your record is clean we're going to let you off with a warning this time."

I'd agree with that, but it's still lame to fitted with a stereotype and lumped in with all the morons. I've never caused an accident and I've never filed an insurance claim, so why do I get a bad rap? I guess it's a good thing I'm not part of a real minority, I'd probably complain a lot.

Some helpful info...
Anytime an officer observes a violation the results can be anywhere from not getting stopped all the way up to going to jail (depending on the violation)....
A good attitude can't hurt, while a bad one almost always does...
10 mph over the speed limit is generally the flow of traffic (at least in Fl) and SHOULD keep you out of trouble....
Realize if you play (ie; commit a traffic infraction), be prepared to pay (ie; traffic citation)
Police Officers are human too and are prone to having bad days like everyone else... Most cops try not to let this affect how they deal with people, but is not always the case....
If you do things to attract attention in populated areas, you may get more attention than you want...
If you do things to attract attention in the wee hours of the morning, you may get more attention than you want...
We no longer prefer doughnuts and coffee... It is now bagels and lattes...LOL  |

I dont know about other depts around the country but there are no fat bodies in mine. I guess it all depends on the individual dept and how much pride each person has in themselves. Believe me I won't be obese anytime soon. |

It must be my area of PA. For those wondering what I am talking about, a drive through the city of Philadelphia would explain my question.
I would think being in less than optimal shape for a law enforcement person would be dangerous to them for multiple reasons. |

I recently witnessed a bunch of State Troopers graduating from the Academy here in Colorado. My Sister-In-Law's husband was in there. He was the ONLY person who could actually run a mile. I'll take my chances outrunning ALL of the lard butts here any day on foot! |
