hal's performance use a modified xb9r to get over 135 hp & 171 & change mph top speed ..

how'd they do it?

bore from 3.5" to 3.812" .. stroke to 3.6" .. twin thottle bodies, rammed air intakes, diff. cam .. lightened crank & flywheels .. standard hydo lifters .. & some other stuff .. it was in a magazine article on buell racing ..

its winds up being 1348cc .. u can keep standard stroke on xb9, change bore to above & get 1150cc therabouts .. revs faster & to nearly 9000 & it hardly any slower ..

now THATS what i'm talking abt ..

"Dr Greg"; I don't agree with how Don(Combat) responded to your post, I do however agree that your post could come across as being kinda snooty. Just IMHO.

I can see how your post *could* have been tongue-in-cheek, and realize the written word is tricky, both to write what you actually mean and to read and interpret correctly - but the clipart is often a good help there : )

I think a much better approach would have been to participate in the discussion with a positive input; For instance, If you have in-depth knowledge in the area, then boil it down to a precise description in layman's terms and include a few stick figures, thus helping all of us better appreciate and debate the topic at hand.

How about it.

Henrik

Maybe I was a bit combative ; ), but I don't appreciate being called ignorant...

Maybe it's just me : ).

To answer your question... Certainly when someone offends me. I'm not one to just walk away, especially when someone implies that I am ignorant because they didn't quite understand the subtleties of the context I was speaking in.

On the subject of designing bearings... I don't know what you do or don't do but I do know that it has nothing to do with the comment. I didn't mean to imply that you could or couldn't design a bearing... I meant to imply that the act of doing so is engineering, and the formula you posted was math.

The topic at hand : ) -

I guess I don't really have anything more to say : ).

Where's Blake when you need him???

He has written so much on the subject that I would have loved to see both Blake and Dr. Greg explore the subject.

That truly would have been a Gentlemen's discussion and educational as well.

M1 and Henrik: points well taken. I didn't intend to be "snooty" but I guess I was. I've debated this HP vs Torque thing with people who should know better, so I'm overly sensitive. `Nuff said.

Re: "ignorant"...I routinely offend students by telling them that they're not "stupid," just "ignorant." Ignorant means you just haven't learned it yet, stupid means you can't learn it. They're usually not amused...

P.S. I mainly design robot controllers...also had the idea for the LENCO "manual" automatic tranny the drag racers use.

Hehehehe. . . . I am actually studying ALL this stuff again at NYU. But, in my "real life" I am a construction worker with grants me the de fecto protection of lowered expectations. I'm expected to have memorized neither Planck's constant, have any idea where acoustic engineers came up with 4005 or understand McNaughton's Rule!

But, based solely on 12 years of Buell inter-boards, I have to tell you that the HP vs. Toruqe discussion is like NYC morning traffic. Everyone KNOWS that the solution should be simple, obvious and intutive....it just never comes about.

The Torque v. HP relationship is nearly intuitive for some of the engineering types. We have, like both you and Henrik, a goodly number of folks holding Doctor's degrees here and some highly educated folks. The classic remains the "what are you a rocket scientist?" to which the reponse came "yes" from the nasa.jsa domain.

Someone here acutally posted a link to one of the most understandable, for those of us from whom MENSA has requested the cards back, explanations of the torque v. HP relationship. Aaron does a good job of explaining it.

Me? I just don't get it so I am going to head out, rain and all, through New Jersey today and just keep repeating my "twist throttle, obeserve results" empirical analysis data collection exercise.

And how is that working for you bucko? Getting great results from those students are you?

i have a xb12s and after a test ride with one with the race kit, i had to have that sound. so i had them install it before i picked up the bike. i also asked them to dyno it before and after. i gained virtually no hp but gained about 7 lbs of torque. here are the results.had to pencil in the lines, they were to hard to see

Brucelee - when I give students the "ignorant v. stupid" discussion I do it with a smile on my face. And I just received the School of Engineering award for Senior Faculty Teaching Excellence. Not trying to blow any horns, but don't demean my relationship with students, please.

Ignorance is bliss.

I am ignorant of many many things. Am I stupid? No. I just havn't learned these things yet. I was ignorant to the Pope's death untill two days after it happened. I was ignorant of most things buell till I came here to this awesome site and met all you crazy bastards (I mean that in a flattering way)

Basicly the best definition for ignorance is "Lack of Knowledge" nothing more, nothing less. Used in propper context, it is neither insulting nor is it derogatory.

e.i.
Dr Gregg is "ignorant" as to how people on this board take things.

Metalstorm is "ignorant" when it comes to rocket science.

I can spend years learning it but I don't. I guess I choose to be ignorant when it comes to rocket science.
