I have an '03 XB9S, Latus muffler, open airbox conversion kit, TFI with a stock ECM. I followed the instructions. Raised the bikes idle to 1800 RPM, had all the POTS set at start (1:00), then raised the Green POT to about 3:30 and it sounded pretty good. I then set the other POTs to the recommended start out settings of 7,4,7. When I hit the throttle, it seems like it's hanging up? Takes awhile for the RPM's to come back down? I did put on new handlebars and grips as well, so I thought it may be my throttle cable was hanging up, but before I put the TFI on, I put the new bars and muffler on and started the bike to hear the new pipe, and the throttle worked fine? I know the settings for the 12's and 9's are different, and I've read everything on hear from too rich, to too lean? I have not actually ridden the bike yet, as I have a cast on until May 10th, and I have read on here that you should set the GREEN POT and set the other POTS to the recommended settings, go ride it a few times and let the ECM adjust to the TFI and other mods then make adjustments. But it just doesn't seem right that my throttle is hanging up like it is? And it seems like the idle will rise up to about 2200 RPM's for no reason, without adding fuel by the throttle. Any suggestions/answers? |

my throttle hangs up at 2000. If i back off the clutch when stopped at a light and brakes engaged the rpms go down and then back to around 1000. I've had a TPS reset and ran this around at 3500 for a while with no change. Warming the bike up and adjusting the idle screw doesn't help either. It's funny because after I had the TPS reset and rode for a while I thought it was working great. Since that ride it's all up again and I haven't made any changes. I really don't like this TFI at all... |

Yea, it seems like it's hard as hell to get adjusted? Might be more trouble than it's worth. And you can't get any response on the Techlusion website in the forums. They say to set it at the recommended settings and then adjust accordingly. I'm no dyno tech, nor a moto mechanic, so alot of this garb and lingo I'm a leyman too, so I guess I'll have to take it to a dyno and shell out more $$$$$$$$$$$$ |

Lower your idle rpm a little... |

I thought I had it about as low as i could get it, it's steady at about 1000 rpm's, but i'll try it some more, thanks. |

Hey Fran, what's your settings on your TFI? |

Keep in mind that the idle adjustment screw is a VERY fine adjustment. It takes quite a bit of turning to make a difference. The ONLY time I've heard of an XB hanging around 2K or so is when the idle was set too high. As far as setting the TFI and then "adjusting accordingly"... That means take it to a Dyno. |

M1, I'll take cash, check, or charge . I'm gonna have to start my own collection website to pay for all this crap

The bike will just be idling, and then the RPM's spike. I fiddled with the idle some more last night and tried to take it down as low as I could. But then when I gas it, it's lagging/coughin on throttle increase, like it's flooding the engine for a second. Then when the RPM's do rise, they stay elevated for awhile, like the throttle is hanging up. It's not returning to idle very fast at all. I'm at a loss right now. I'm just going to start riding (when I get my ankle right) and fool with it I guess. Or just take it to a dyno would probably be better. |

I'm still playing with it. My mpg has been lower lately (43 mpg). When I first put the TFI on, I was getting about 50 mpg. I think I need to put in a new set of plugs. Haven't put it on a dyno. I think the settings are: 3:30 4 3 8 My RPM will hang up just as you described if it is set above 1000 on the bikes RPM gage. When I set just below 1000 all's fine. Good luck |

"I fiddled with the idle some more last night and tried to take it down as low as I could. But then when I gas it, it's lagging/coughin on throttle increase, like it's flooding the engine for a second. " Are you "whacking" the throttle open, or rolling it on when this happens? I have never been able to get the off idle throttle "whacking" response down to where it just won't stumble once and then take off. I learned to just roll into the throttle at idle. The only time you should ever need to whack the throttle open off a real idle is if something surprises you at a stop sign or something. I've found that it all works great if I go about 1/32 of a turn on the throttle for about 1/32 of a second and then whack it open from there. Just a nearly imperceptible delay just after I open it. Every ence in a while I catch it a little after TDC on the rear cyl so the crank has to go 405 degrees before it gets power and it'll still stumble once. If the RPMs spike more than maybe 100 or so then that maybe sounds like either plugs or TPS sensor/TPS reset... Keep in mind that XB's seem to be a tad sensitive to blipping the throttle off idle causing fouled plugs when the engine is cold... |

M1, "I have never been able to get the off idle throttle "whacking" response down to where it just won't stumble once and then take off. I learned to just roll into the throttle at idle." This is so damned annoying - and frustrating !!! Every other properly tuned motor in everything I have ever owned from an XS650 Yamaha, to an SCCA Transam Camaro racecar was able to be tuned to have smooth, SHARP throttle response. In my mind, if the intake system is properly tuned, the motor will be sharp and responsive to even the slightest throttle opening ??? Don't get me wrong - the XB is a superb, hi-tech machine, but the off idle response SUCKS and sometimes makes it feel like you're riding a poorly tuned rat bike !!! EE |

Fran, My MPG dropped from 55 to 40 with TFI at the recommended setting. I only get 100-110 before the fuel light comes on. Used to get as high as 160 before the light comes on. |

So if I plan on taking a decent length of a trip, I should unplug the TFI eh? Or can you just set the POT's back to 1:00 and it's like not having it plugged in? I think if I go on a long trip where I want to save some $ on gas, I'll just unplug the thing. Hell, if I can't get it tuned right, I might just unplug it and send it back to Dobeck. I tested my TFI thoroughly with the race ECM and ended up removing the TFI. |

My TFI is gone. I was running it with the force pipe and had tried everything, couldn't get consistent results with this thing and the fun factor took a big crap. Last year I had the D&D and the race ecm and the bike was loud enough, sounded great, and was so much fun to ride. The throttle response was instantaneous and never stumbled. I am going with a PCIII and if that doesn't help, I'll go back to what I had last year. |
