I just got a phone call from my dealer today. He told me that I have a sidestand recall for my new XB9SX. He want me to bring the bike right now even if he doesn't have the part. He said I must not ride the bike, it's risky. I said I will bring the bike when he will have the part in stock. I don't want to leave my bike at the dealer if it take a month to get the part. Anybody know something about this recall? What is the problem? I saw some recall on previous years XB9 model but nothing on the 2005 model. Is it really risky to ride the bike. Can I check something in particular before I ride my bike to be sure there's no problem? Any info will be appreciate. Thanks! Sylvain |

It's true. This recall may affect the XB9SX. The following is from the NHTSA. Make / Models : Model/Build Years: BUELL / XB12R 2005 BUELL / XB12S 2005 BUELL / XB9SX 2005 Manufacturer : BUELL MOTORCYCLE CO. NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 05V148000 Recall Date : APR 13, 2005 Component: STRUCTURE:MOTORCYCLE KICKSTAND/CENTER STAND Potential Number Of Units Affected : 149 Summary: ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, THE SIDESTAND MAY NOT RETRACT AS DESIGNED IF CONTACT IS MADE WITH THE GROUND WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. Consequence: THIS COULD, IN TURN, DISRUPT THE STABILITY OF THE MOTORCYCLE LEADING TO A CRASH, CAUSING DEATH OR INJURY TO THE RIDER. Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SIDESTAND PIVOT BOLT WITH A SIMILAR BOLT THAT IS .100 INCH LONGER. THIS CHANGE WILL ALLOW THE SIDESTAND TO OPERATE AS DESIGNED. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BUELL AT 1-414-343-8400. Notes: CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION’S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236. |

So buy a new bolt and replace it yourself, then you don't have to wait. |

Are you riding an SX now Craig? Anybody got a VIN range? I think I am XB9SX number 30 or something, so may be a lucky winner. |

Should I expect the dealer to send a postcard with a recall notice ? |

ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, THE SIDESTAND MAY NOT RETRACT AS DESIGNED IF CONTACT IS MADE WITH THE GROUND WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. I don't see how it can be in contact with the ground if you don't forget to retract it before riding the bike? Thanks for the info! |

Not mine. I bought it in December 2004. Reep, you should be fine as well because I am #35. |

Cool! 5 bikes apart! Doh! You are right, if the wrong part was installed on MY sx between January 11 and January 17 2005, then there was an elf infestation in my garage. (not that I would see that as a bad thing, they just should have told me so I can feed them beer and bring cigars). (Message edited by reepicheep on April 26, 2005) |

I think I must have one of the first XB9SX's. Mine was manufactured July of 2004. Along the same lines, my buddies who have 2003 XB's think that something is different/quirky with my sidestand. When the stand touches the pavement, it keeps moving a little further until it finally locks into place. It makes the bike lean further over when parked, which could be a good thing. Does anyone elses do this? When I heard of the recall, I imediately thought I would be affected. |

Mine was made in January 2005. About the production number, the last digits of the VIN is 53000010. The 5 is the year, the 3 is the place where is was manufactured and the next digits is the sequential number (from the service manual). So my bike was manufactured in January 2005 and it's the 10th bike they made??? I don't get this one Maybe it's the 10th bike made in 2005... (Message edited by stou on April 26, 2005) |

Dtx, that is exactly what mine does. Stou, that makes sense, the year reset, so I would expect the sequence number to reset anyway. So basically, you are saying your bike was built by a bunch of hung over elves, the day after new years |

I disagree with the thinking that they reset the numbers in 2005. My VIN is also 53******. 5 refers to the MODEL year, not the year of production. The last six digits are described as a SEQUENTIAL NUMBER in the Buell manual. Stou, this means that your bike was most likely built awhile ago, but held in inventory for a long time. |

Pa_xb9sx, on the bike it's indicated that it was manufactured in January 2005. |

Something is odd, mine is marked as built Jul 04, and my vin is 53000060 (not 30 as I thought). |

I agree Reepicheep...something is odd. Mine was also manufactured Jul 04. My vin is 53000035. VIN parts are described on the first few pages of the owner's manual. Check it out. The way the manual makes it sound, 000010 should have been built before 000035 and 000060. Stou - Are you sure you have 000010? If anyone knows what is going on with these VINs, please chime in. |
