Man, I was on my way home just a moment ago and I was cresting this small hill painted with DOUBLE YELLOW lines when all of the sudden an idiot in a truck pulls out of the curb and crosses the double yellow to do a U turn. I thought I was gonna t- bone this moron. Thank god for the great brakes on my XB man. The retard just looked at me like what? you got a problem? Totally oblivious to what he almost caused. You gotta love driving in Oakland. |

Hey, try living in the woods in NJ. I get deer that run out in front of me all the time, and can't even get the satisfication of giving them the finger. |

In the Bay Area, the deer are smarter than the cagers. |

Had my last bike meet a deer at 50mph, .... not much you can do when they drop onto the road in front of you ( came off the bank on the right side of the road, about 10 at night ) He and my bike both ended up off the left side of the road, terminated.... I wound up standing on the yellow line, lost a tattoo on that night, never ride without a jacket anymore. |

I was riding behind a jeep and a van, both traveling a bit slow on one of my favorite stretches of highway...there was no safe place to pass so I just chilled for a while at 30-40 mph. The guy in the jeep decides he wants to turn around. There is very little if any shoulder so he begins to turn around in the highway...the turn/backup/turn some more routine...and he is doing this at the entrance to a 90 degree blind corner! Anyone, car or bike, coming around the corner at even the posted speed wouldn't have had a chance to brake and prevent a collision. Later I was following a truck down the mountain...he was running a pretty good clip and crossing the center line in a few of the curves, but when we got to a series of 10-15 mph [posted] switchbacks, he was completely in the wrong lane. A car coming up the mountain had to quick stop to avoid a head on collision. Perhaps seeing these things is good...it reminds me that regardless of how well I know a particular road, there could be something very weird going on on the other side of that blind curve I love to carve. Let's be careful out there.... |

I second that Eor. Glad to know that the bay area doesn't have the monopoly on friggin' idiot cagers. |

I hear ya man - I had some sharp words Friday night for a total idiot Houston driver that turned into my lane like I wasn't there. He looked at me like I was speakin monkey. |

It sometimes scares new riders, but one of the first pieces of advice I give (solicited or not) is that when you ride, you MUST assume every other vehicle on the road is an idiot that will try to kill you. |

This is the line I'm going to use on the next cop that pulls me over for speeding.... "I wasn't speeding officer, I was surviving" Ski |

'ski & Ems .. totally agree with both of you . though I have to say that here in Washington state I can anticipate what a cage is going to do .. but NOT another biker at times . YES 99.99% are totally cool and will obey the rules but there are a group that feel that they own the road .. I am a returning rider .. so I ADMIT that I am at times scared SH$%LESS so, I am in the right lane in the right wheel track .. leaving plenty of room to pass .... there have been several times when I get passed in this situation when the other bike is in the middle of my lane flying by me (mind you I was already doing 55-60 in a 45) and get flipped off by the other biker .. tell me gang .. am I doing something wrong ????? I try to be VERY aware of my cherry/squid like status right now ... any tips from the veterans out there ??? |

Drivers aren't any better up here. I swear they are aiming for me, then give me the "your insane" look. Cops are a little better most of them anyway. Passed one on the left (didn't see him I am not that stupid) the other day doing about 20mph over the posted. Must have had better things to do. (Message edited by buellin_ri on April 26, 2005) |

I know living here in FT lauderdale. I take every morning with same out look. who is going to try and kill me today? My friend and I where out riding last week end. This cager makes a left. he was going east we where going east. He was on his cell never even looked. We had to gas just to keep from getting hit. then slam the best brakes known to man on our buells. to avoid the car in front. To this day I still don't think he knows we where there... My friend thinks a paint ball pistol on low setting should get him to look up.... |

I only had one guy try to kill me today. Piece of advice - never ever get to the right of any vehicle on the highway passing an off ramp. The guy at the last second dove across three lanes of traffic trying to make his exit. I saw it comming - missed me. The lady to my right didn't. She slammed on her brakes tryng to miss him, the 18-wheeler behind her wasn't expecting that either. |

Living in southern California......When pulled over for speed a few years back the cop asked me if I knew how fast I was going. I answered I had no idea. He asked if I ever checked my speedo. I said "They have a name for riders that keep their eyes on their gages in Southern California traffic......ROADKILL" He laughed and let me off with a warning. |

Xb9rski, Another excuse for speeding I heard from a comedian (can't remember his name) a number of years ago: "I was trying to keep a safe distance in front of the guy behind me." |

Jessicasdad- If I recall, the MSF recommends being in the inside side of the lane (left tire track for right lane, right for the left), so as to discourage other vehicles from trying to squeeze through to pass. But go with what makes you most comfortable. |

Try riding in NJ. its urban warfare out here. I was crusing down a local road doing about 45-50mph when up ahead i see this blue mercedes front end sticking out. I said to myself "self this car is gonna pull out in front of you" sure enough as I get close enough to see this womans eyeballs she does it, turns directly in front of me, I swerved downshifted and cursed the day she was born. I was pissed!!! lucky for me and unlucky for her, I catch her at the next light pull up next to her window, at this point i know she sees me but is scared to look my way, so i gently tap her window and she rolls it down. I very nicely asked her "hi did u not see me coming?" she replies "I only saw ur lights" im was dumbfounded. I said " you only saw my lights? did u think the motorcycle was going down the street by itself?, next time be more careful before you kill somebody" she was so scared she started crying and said "im sorry sir" I didn't feel bad screw her. Imagine the tears that my son and wife would have shed. |

Carlos - Well done! I'm afraid I wouldn't have been so polite. I think your intelligent, measured approach is probably much more effective than my emotional 1 finger salute would have been. |

A friend of mine in the UK, now incidentally a cop, has been known to apply the sole of his boot to the door mirror in the circumstance Carlos described. Only had a wild turkey try to kill me this weekend, came out of the woods about 10 feet ahead , luckily about 2 feet above my head ,I was doing about 40 this time, another time might have been different. |

Steve, Believe me I have done the good ol 1 finger salute plenty of times, I have even kicked a few doors, thrown pennies, nuts, washers at cars but I saw something very scary last year at Hooters on route 22. This honda civic cut off a harley and the harley guy sped up changed lanes and was giving the honda the finger, little did he know the van in front of him hit the brakes hard, the biker never saw the van and he slammed into the van, body hit full force. I never found out if the guy died but the scene was horrible, he just layed face down on the ground twitching. I felt sick. But he took his eyes of the road for a few seconds to give this guy the finger. So now I usually ignore it unless we come to a stop light |
