Hey everyone, Is it just me or do you guys notice the unbelievable amount of noise that comes from the engine on Buells? Sometimes I wonder if all is well with my bike. She's got plenty of oil. Are your bikes as noisy? Or should I worry? | ||

You must be coming off an inline four, or a water cooled bike. Don't worry I was in the same boat. Got my XB 2 years ago, and I still ask the mechanic to come out and listen when I stop in at the dealer. Takes a long time to get used to. | ||

You are right U4. I was riding a GSXR for a long time prior to Buell. It does take some getting used to it appears then. Well good to know that my bike isn't falling apart. | ||

I'm glad someone else brought it up. I was really starting to wonder if the noise was normal as well. Even with my Jardine, I can hear a lot of mechanical noise that appears to be coming from the heads. It's not even that all of my bikes have been inline bikes either. I've had a Honda CX500 Deluxe, which is a V-twin but with the engine mounted similar to the early BMW's. My brother also had a Honda Ascot 500, which again is a V-twin. Neither of those bikes was as loud as my Buell. I've really wanted to either meet some other Buell owners or take a demo on another bike to see if my is excessive. | ||

i had a cbr900rr and i thought that it was loud with the pipe on it. the other day i was riding a buddies r6. Well after killing it twice because i could not figure out if it was even running, i quickly went back to my X1. i rather enjoy the noise that it makes. It def. makes people turn and look and wounder. i am still getting used to all the noise, but "I LIKE IT" | ||

Pc- that cx500 deluxe was one Helluva a machine. Couldn't make that bike stop running with a hammer, least the one that was in my fathers garage. Wish I could get my hands on a descent used one. Given it was water cooled and trnsverse v-twin the motor noise was very unique to that particular bike. | ||

My Buell is definitely quieter than my Norton. Now that is a noisy and shaky engine. I still love it though. | ||

Mine's the same way too, along with the other XB9SX rider in the area. (Few other Buell riders on XB's but I can't seem to be on the road on my bike when they are.) Anyways, I was told by the tech at my local HD and mine and his are the quietest he's heard. They had one guy on an XB come in that it sounded like it was going to go boom any minute. The dealership took the bike and tore down the engine to find what was wrong. Turns out, nothing was, it was in perfect condition. They put it back together and it made the same noise. Guy still rides it to this day from what I'm told. These engines are noisy. Just something that comes with the Buell's using HD engines. | ||

Well, my two cents, I think most of the noise is from the primary and the valves as a result of the ramps on the cams. My XL1200 Sport is noisier than the standard XL1200, and one of the main differences is the cam(s). Obviously, the Buell also has a higher lift and different cam ramps from the standard Harleys too. The cams themselves are not making the noise, but the valves are. I think someone said most of the noise sounded like it was coming from the head. Just something to think about regarding all the racket. | ||

You're right U4euh, it was a really good bike for me. Rode that thing from Minnesota to Colorado straight through both ways. It also did really well up in the mountains even though the air was pretty thing up there. Handled well and I was always able to start that thing right up in early March after sitting in storage for 4-5 months. Owning that thing was a bit like owning a Buell. Never saw another one the whole time I owned it. Everyone wanted the 500 Customs. | ||

Any sharp knocking noise is something to be concerned with, but as long as it's the regular clatter and thrash, it's normal. | ||

4 (count 'em) gear driven cams, triple row primary chain, with a non spring-loaded "tensioner". and a full complement of cooling fins to transmit all the racket, it is really a wonder that they are as quiet as they are. | ||

You must be coming off an inline four, or a water cooled bike Not necessarily. Have you ever heard a Ducati or BMW i-4 at idle? Due to the dry clutch, they sound like someone shaking a coffee can full of marbles. (I have a BMW K1200RS that is every bit as loud at idle as my 12R.) cheers! WYD |
