Friday, Evening I come wheelin in the garage, pleasantly surprised to see 14 y.o. son puttering around with the bikes, doing some maintenance, or just "crate time" i dont know which. as usual, i ride right straight in the 42 inch wide man-door,turn hard to portside, shut motor off, remove helmet, gloves earplugs. return to bike, and in normal fashion pick up back end, and proceed to swing the bike through 90 degrees, to align it rearward with its parking slot right ahead of sportster, and next to wifes ducati. but first, i had to issue this quote" This is what I love about this bike, its so easy to turn around" now that i have the undivided attention of my star witness, i raise the bike up 4 inches, take the first step , and my knee buckles, just folds right up. i go down, the bike is now laying on its left side. 14 year old is sauntering forth to assist, i try to stand, but some tendon or something in my knee prevents it from straightening. so after 30 seconds of me writhing around on the floor, i am determined to pick the bike up, while hopping on one leg. half way up, we drop it a second time. that breaks the left side footpeg off. this time i relax for a longer period, wedge a block of wood behind my folded knee for a little while, till the joint eases itself back into proper format. then we calmly lift the bike back to its upright position.knee is functioning normally for the moment, i swap the passenger peg for the customized two piece rider peg. number one son goes to check on the status of dinner. 10,900 miles on, and i have the great fortune of being allowed to have its first grounding in the garage, with my son to assist me. pretty cool, huh?

Ouch. Does your knee do that often? That sounds painful.

As to dropping it in the garrage... My only time having to replace parts on the Blast was when I kicked the rear turn signal off as I was washing the bike.

I was lying under my 1974 Nova at the ripe age of 17 when my knee decided it would no longer work. I had surgery to remove 3/4 of my cartalige 6 hours later....

So was dinner ready?
Seriously, I'm sorry to hear that. I think we've all had our moments. I remember when I was a teenager on my little nighthawk. I came up to a stop sign and forgot to put my feet down and down I went. I think the bike was just a couple weeks old if I recall right.
At least it was a 0 mph drop rather than an 80 mph superman over the bars off the side of a road kinda thing. (Another stupid thing I did as a teenager) And your Son was there to assist you. That's cool. (Except for him reminding you of it every day for the rest of your life)

I hope your knee is ok and don't feel too bad. It was a bad knee, not bad judgement.

update: had the use of a friends TIG welder, and did a fair job of welding the footpeg pieces back together. think the wifes assesment was something like " not too bad, should work ok" or like that. have ordered a new peg from Dave Steuve, only about 12 bucks and change. my welded one is holding well for now. my knee has been behaving itself mostly, except once in a while, when i am lifting or lowering heavy objects ( motorcycles). i get more frequent reminders of my age these days.

your's was a bad knee mine was stupidity and beer. I was washing my xb in the drive way. Had the bike on the rear wheel stand. Since I wasn't ridding I had 1 or 2 beers while I washed and detailed the bike. I forgot I put the kick stand up while detailing ...and yep you guessed er... I went to lower the bike off the wheel stand just to watch it horror as it settle and then fell on it's left side. Man you want to talk about feeling stupid. I rushed to pick the bike up and realized how glad I was to have put the frame pucks on. NO DAMAGE. Well now I don't drink at all when messing, washing, or ridding my bike.

Hope the knee is alright!

13 years ago, after me and some buddies had
been out riding. We set on the front deck
and had a few beers. I then attempted to put
the bike up, a ZX7RR. Low sided in the grass
picked it up, and dropped it on the other
side. Cracked both fairings.

I was pulling a wagon loaded with concrete mix about two weeks ago. As the lawn was at an incline I was paying attention behind me to make sure it did't shift. I see the bikeand turn the wheel to the side. NOT ENOUGH though, as the front wheel cuaght the rear wheel of the bike, and me fumbling with the brakes on the lawn tractor didn't help. I think I hit every lever and switch the mower had before I got it stopped, Only after watching in the same horror mentioned above as the bike rolled so effortlessly forward and onto its' side. Luckily the rubber tire of the mower caught most of the impact and didn't do no damege. Wouldn't have mattered anyway, it is still the same shape it was in after running off the road in GA.!

Okay, I've got the $10,000 moment if I could have had it on video. I know this would have won on "Funniest Home Videos". Picture this I'm at Daytona Bike Week. My last day at the hotel, the vehicle is packed I'm hooking up the trailer, I open the hatch on the back of the vehicle the spare tire slides out hitting the hitch on the trailer rolling across the parking lot hitting the wife's idling blasts gear shifter. The blast kicks into first jumps off the kick stand and falls against my XB12S that I had just picked up on the way to bike week. Of course there was about a dozen or so fellow bikers getting ready to leave also who witnessed my ordeal

Yeah, you win the prize, Muell. I had a GSX1100R sitting at the gas pump as I went in to get my change. some retard backed into it claiming he didn't see it sitting there as he drove by. Thank God that's the only time one of my bikes has been down (knock on wood) except for dirtbikes.

when i was in high school i rode my step dads 83 honda v65 1100 around. the night before the last day of school i parked it out side on the carport right outside the door side stand toward the door.... well after waking up missing breakfast and hurrying to get to class i ran out the door tripped on the weatherstripping and flew head first into the left side of the bike and knocking it over into the old mans new grill, bending th bars and tearing the seat.

Here is one for ya. Last yr me and my buds showed up to a hotel after a 8 hr ride. After checking into our rooms, we where off to the big party. I just had a custom helmet made with the horns attached to the side and that alone was gathering all the looks little own the bike. Well we where all mounted and had grams looking out her window with a smile and a wave. I put it in first hit the throttle turned left and down she went. Took about 1 sec to lift the bike being mad and the chance of a loss with all the chrome and being in the road in a turn as well. Turns out I had left a pad lock on the fork lock. Mmmm. Told every else where I showed the bike at I think my foot got away from me to do some small rocks. Mmm. HA that's until my buds recalled the event to me. Out about $500.00 that night in chrome.

Rode my new XB12S to the office due to a PER FECT day. I'm looking for a shady spot to nest the bike till lunch, so I park her on a new paved section under our staircase. Well, about 30 min later one of my technicians comes up and says my bike is layed over. I think he's just messing with me so I never go check. He wasn't messing with me. The stand sunk into the new tarmac. Broke the foot peg, scratched the (newly installed) frame puck, and mirror, bent the clutch lever. That was just the icing on the cake for that day because I had just split up with my girlfriend.

First let me say that I do not condone drunk driving in any situation, and this story is from my youth when I had little or no sense.

Driving home from the bar on a Katana 750 in 1989, smashed. Sliding the rear through the turns, bullet proof. Pull up at girlfriends place, get off bike real cool, lean it over, and you guessed it, forgot the side stand. That ugly sound of small pebbles grinding into plastic.

Same drill. . . Rossville, KS . . pulled to the side of the road to relieve myself. . . road on the right, about a 65o drop off the shoulder on the right. . . biked tipped the wrong way and tumbled, with me tangled up in it, to the bottom of the 30' embankment.

Neither recommended nor endorsed.

Fullbuddy -- hope yer knee is better, but, if my experience is any guide, it's started a long march from whence it will not return -- keep an eye on it, and soon you'll develop workarounds so you can get all the stuff what needs doin done without further embarassment (or, at elast, not frequent further embarressment!)

I did an 0MPH drop one time. Luckily it was in some soft grass. Dug the mud out of the pegs and brushed mud off the pipes. No other damage. Only one to see it was me.

FIRST TIME on my xb9R I proceeded to drive out of my driveway, into the neighbor's ditch, ramped that sucker like a pro, and landed on my right leg. 10,000 dollars and a couple pieces of titanium later I could walk again. Funny part was, only bent my right side mirror in a little. Damn bike was tougher than me!

Fullpower - Same thing happened to me at work. My buddies had to straighten my leg out. Went to the doctor and found out I had a meniscus cartilage tear. On a lighter note, that night at the house same thing happened again. This time I had the wife straighten the leg. At which time I ripped one. I thought it was funny… she didn't. Now my back hurts from sleeping on the couch.

Always hate to hear of a dropped bike! Mine was much worse, someone must have sprinkled some DUMBA$$ on my breakfast or something. Went riding for a few, came home and parked the bike in the driveway directly in front of my F150 with 13" of lift riding on 39"s. Pops called needed some under the hood work done on his car, so I told him to bring it over & pull it in the driveway. So I proceeded to go out through the garage and hop right up in the beast, forgetting all about the bike!! If I had used the front door, all would have been fine. Ran the bike over, neighbor watching and all. Have to admit they are (XB's)pretty darn tough. Few scratches, bent both bars, broke both levers, broke kickstand, and a tweaked mirror. Went and ordered parts, all is fine.....Sold the truck!!!

I think we have a tie for #1

Here's one:
Started up the bike and rode to the store, it was cold so I left the bike running with it resting on the kick stand. Went inside, talked to a friend, we looked outside at the bike, and I said goodbye. I went outside, pull on the helmet, and the bike was laying on it's side. I was so fussed I didn't even look back to see if my friend say it. The bike was still running, I picked it up and rode off. Oooof.

ok...my turn to eat humble pie...just last week i was pushing my bike in the garage after my ride home from work...my grandmother was heading back in the house when my 20 month old son escapes from the nanny, pushes past grandma and comes running down the ramp alternating his favorite chant of "daddy" and "bike"...as i know he really loves the bike...i pushed it in quickly so i could pick him up before he tries to climb up the hot motor...quickly i put the side stand down just in time to take two steps toward him and swoop him up...then...i hear a creak...my heart stops for a moment as i realize what i have done...then...the tell tale crash...the bike topples over...son starts to cry and grandma is embarrassed she couldn't hold the boy back...boy do i feel like a loser for losing my focus for a split second...anyway...good to be back on the board...and btw...no damage to speak of...just a small oil leak and a popped turn signal lens

ciao,

ok....not a story that ends with a toppled bike...but still stupid is as stupid does...

...i was fresh out of college and just purchased a new '93 fzr6...the classic red/wht/blue...beautiful bike...i had approximately 1200 miles on the bike and was just completing my first month of ownership and riding with my MC Permit...in IN this means must wear helmet (no problem), must be off the roads before nightfall (future problem)...anyway...i had a new job...new bike...new apartment in a new city...oh yeah...i also had a 'new' 1980 chevy citation that i purchased for $300.00 to drive when it rained...in hindsight i would have been better off to spend the $300 bucks on a cheap rain suit and better tires than the BT-50's...but i digress...it was a beautiful week day leading up to the 4th of July Holiday...i threw some water and a sandwich in my bag...strapped it on my bike and headed up the road to my alma mater via Purdue...all the way to Lafayette...i rode 65mph on old US52...boring...but i definitely didn't want a ticket...and really wasn't ready to push the bike just yet...anyway...got to purdue with no troubles...ate my sandwich while lying under a tree on campus and just soaked up the summer school eye candy...jumped back on the road to head south to crawfordsville...eased my way outta town and started in on old US231...the road started calling my name...first a gentle curve....then another and another....it was awesome...my adrenaline was already boiling from lunch and now i was loving the ride...i kept pushing and before you knowit, i was pulling into c-ville city limits...some 17mins later...my speed was absurd but i did my best to neither molest civilians nor malign the reputation of bikers...once in town, i stopped by the old shelter to say goodbye to a couple of international brothers...i opted to pass on the obligatory, celebratory beer...and headed out on the road back to carmel...the whole way...i took US32 and never exceeded 10 over the posted limit...even slowing way down in towns...it was a great day...my thoughts were drifting through the days events...and soon i didn't know where i was...the sun was setting...and i hadn't come across US431 anywhere...i'm sure that's the road my apartment was off of...dang-it...i'll just push on a little further...well.....no sign of 431 and mileage/time wise i should have been there 20mins ago...it was starting to get dark and i know convinced myself i had missed the turn...so i'm cruising behind this maroon chevy...just biding my time until the road/trees/traffic allow me to pass...soon...i see the perfect opportunity....the road S-curves down and to the left...crosses a bridge and then S-curves back up and to the right... i can see down in the valley...no cars, no roads...i can see across the valley...again...no cars, no intersecting roads...i kick it down into third and let the motor climb...pass the car in a curve...ease back and then pass another car on the bridge...back up and let it hang out for the next mile until i hit US13...once there...i just sit at the flashing light...having no idea where i am...i look to the left and to the right a couple of times before deciding on heading to the liquor store just down from the corner to ask for directions...about the time i'm throwing my leg off the bike...the maroon chevy pulls up behind me...and turns on it's lights...yes ladies and gentlemen....i was busted...bigger than life...caught red handed...this maroon unmarked state patrol car was the first car i passed in the curve...so he witnessed me also making the pass of the second car on the bridge (he reminded me later that this was also a double yellow)...what was i to do...first....i shat my pants...next...i said 'oh my God'...third as i start to take off my helmet and turn around the cop says..."you in a hurry to get to the liquor store son?"...i just had to laugh...and tell him i was lost...he believed me cause he was a rider himself...and he saw me sitting at the light looking...well...just looking lost...the cool thing about the whole episode was that he never radioed it in...he thought he had a chase on his hands and was actually a little disappointed that i didn't run...he told me all this while he was giving me a ride home...apparently...in all my excitement to ride...my paper plates and learners permit had expired...so...he towed my bike and said all i had to do was to show the proper registration and MC stamp and i would have no probs...so...despite my stupidity...i still only ended up with a tow bill and 4 days of impound...he also informed me of a few tricks he uses to pace and radar...could have been much worse...

ciao,

When I got back into motos about 3 years ago, I bought a 78 XS650 to get back into the swing of things. So if I dropped it I wouldn't care. The person before me "painted" it in the rubbery undercoating that they put on the bottom of cars. NO JOKE! The week I get the bike I haul to Sturgis with the guys I buy the bike from! We have a gravel driveway at the VFW we are staying at. When leaving, I pack my bike and it was standing pretty much straight up from the block of wood under the stand. It falls over and does the domino thing from the movies. Hits my friends Virago and busts off his turn signals and mirror. And by inches, avoids knocking over someone's Knucklehead which in turn would have knocked over a Panhead. WHEW!
